Community news

• The following were honored with Goodwill Industries' Employees of Distinction Award: Ed Barber, City Scrap and Salvage; Lisa Hawes, Summit County Juvenile Court; Karen Hodge, Fairlawn West United Church of Christ; Polly Lincoln, Summit County Battered Women's Shelter and Rape Crisis Center; and Zavin Miktarian, ASW Global.

• The Portage Lakes Career Center honored Leon McCombs for 15 years of service; Paulette Prince, for 20; and Laura Campriani, Linda Lonsdorf and Joe Fortunato for 25 years.

Bev Rogacs of Akron was the September Star Volunteer honored by Metro Parks, Serving Summit County. She was chosen for her dedication to the park's rock and herb garden.

• Weathervane Community Playhouse honored the following volunteers with the Chanticleer Award: best production, Ragtime, with Jerry Mirman Jr. as production stage manager, Terry Burgler as director and John Ebner as musical director; best sound design, Dan Jankura for Ragtime; best lighting design, Buddy Taylor for Ragtime; best properties design, Kathy Kohl for Enchanted April; best costume design, Marti Coles for Ragtime; best actor, Terry Burgler in Moon Over Buffalo; best actress, Dede Klein in The Lion in Winter; best supporting actor, Scott Shriner in Moon Over Buffalo; best supporting actress, Harriet DeVeto in Enchanted April; best actress, musical: Stephanie Newport in Ragtime; best supporting actress, musical, Natasha R. Williams in Ragtime; best actor, musical, Tom C. Barnes in Ragtime; best supporting actor, musical, Jason Leupold in Ragtime; best performance in the Dietz Theater, Dana Lee and Richard Worswick in Someone Who'll Watch Over Me; and best technical design in the Dietz Theater, Buddy Taylor for lighting design for Someone Who'll Watch Over Me.

The Erin Dillon Youth Recognition Award went to Leah Magnus of Akron; Producer's Award, to Sandra Harding of Rittman; Trustees Award, to Chic Carlson of Akron; and Lifetime Achievement Award, to Betty Williams of Cuyahoga Falls.

School news

• The Ohio Academy of Schience selected the following Akron-area schools and teachers to receive the Governor's Award for Excellence in Youth Science Opportunities: at Akron East High School, William Stone, John Guidubaldi, Bobbi Tidrick, Sharon Kaffen, Charles Armstrong, Johnna O'Neal and Christine Justiss-Simon; at Akron's Innes Middle School, Robin Clark and Annemarie Crofoot; at East Canton High, Lisa Gothard; at Minerva High, Stacey Peters, Valerie Slaton, Molly Winters, Matt Leatherberry and Mike Waller; and at St. Paul School in North Canton, Sharon Varner.

• The following have been promoted to distinguished professor at the University of Akron: Minel Braun of Akron, mechanical engineering; Shelley Baranowski of Gahanna, history: and Chrys Wesdemiotis of Northfield Center, chemistry.

Stephanie Horsfield, daughter of Steve and Vida Horsfield of Bath Township, was accepted into the National Space Biomedical Research Institute's Summer Internship Program. She graduated from Revere High School and received a degree in exercise physiology from Ohio University.

• The Stark County Retired Teachers Association awarded scholarships to Amanda Michele Gorton, Heather V. Pritchard, Jennifer M. Rehfus, Tristyn Ashley Tovissi, Aaron W. Welker and Michael P. Wiley. All are college students majoring in education.

• University of Akron students Kirsten Luffler and Kelli Wright received scholarships through Starkey University, an outreach program that recognizes outstanding audiology students and is administered by Starkey Laboratories, a hearing technology company.

Tim Vierheller, a physics professor at the University of Akron Wayne College, will be acknowledged in a December feature about excellence in education in Ohio Magazine.

• Siblings Alix S. Reilly and Drew C. Reilly of Mogadore were named Presidential Ambassadors at Southeast Missouri State University. They will serve as student representatives of the university president, helping him in meeting and greeting guests, serving at presidential functions and other duties. Drew Reilly is a freshman majoring in political science and philosophy; Alix Reilly is a junior majoring in marketing. Their parents are Shawn and Lori Reilly of Mogadore.

Military news

• Navy Seaman Adam G. Molai completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2005 graduate of Field High School, Brimfield Township.

• Navy Seaman Apprentice Corrin S. Heavner completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2007 graduate of Lake High School, Lake Township.

• Marine Corps Pfc. Eric D. Taylor, son of Jequetta McKirtrick of Akron and John Bishop Jr. of Akron, completed the administrative clerk course at Personnel Administration School, Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is a 2004 graduate of Akron's East High School.
