Stow wants plan on storm cleanup

Council panel, utilities to meet tonight in wake of delays on Conwill

By Gina Mace

STOW: The phone and electrical lines are reconnected and garbage pickup is back on schedule.

Although normalcy has returned for most residents of Conwill Road, which was closed for nearly a week after a windstorm last month, Stow City Council wants changes before another storm hits.

The council's Public Improvements Committee will meet at 7 tonight in council chambers to look at the issues that delayed restoration of basic service to homes on the street.

Mary Bednar, who heads the committee, said a dispute between the utility companies over whose repairs should be first delayed the response after remnants of Hurricane Ike hit the area.

Bednar's committee will meet with representatives of AT&T, FirstEnergy and Time Warner Cable to devise a disaster plan.

''We want to make sure everybody's on the same page,'' Bednar said.

Workers from one company thought they could not start repairs until one of the other utility's downed lines were repaired, Bednar said.

''Even though they were there on site, they wouldn't put their lines up until the other company came out to put their lines up,'' she said.

Bednar wants to ask the companies whether there is a legitimate reason one needs to be repaired before the other.

''We want to make sure when this happens again, our residents are not prevented from getting back to their daily lives because of uncertainty as to whose work needs to be done first,'' she said.
