Fewer vehicles hit deer in Akron area

Summit ranks No. 4 among Ohio counties with 547 crashes in '07

By Bob Downing
Beacon Journal staff writer

Deer-vehicle accidents in the Akron area dropped in 2007, but Summit County was No. 4 among Ohio's 88 counties with 547 accidents.

Across Ohio, such crashes declined by 6.9 percent last year.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Insurance Institute said motorists should be aware that fall is the prime time for such accidents and drive with care.

Overall, Ohio had 26,304 deer-vehicle accidents in 2007 — down from the 28,240 accidents in 2006.

That resulted in 10 deaths and 1,022 injuries in 2007, the agencies said.

The counties with the highest number of deer-vehicle accidents were Hamilton (705), Knox (619) and Richland (571). Delaware was fifth with 540.

The counties with the fewest accidents were Monroe (23), Carroll (52), Hocking (68), Harrison (69) and Vinton (71).

In the Akron area, the number of 2007 deer-vehicle accidents were:

• Summit, 547, down from 629 in 2006.

• Medina, 352, down from 414.

• Portage, 432, up from 407.

• Stark, 495, up from 455.

• Wayne, 269, up from 247.

• Cuyahoga, 400, down from 473.

Most deer-vehicles accidents occur between October and January during deer-breeding season.

State wildlife officials estimate Ohio's deer herd numbers at 700,000, up from the 2007 herd estimate of 675,000.

The Ohio Insurance Institute said damages from deer accidents in 2007 approached $78.9 million.

Maybe because fewer vehicles were on the roads because people couldn't AFFORD to drive.

The worse the economy. The fewer deer you will see running around...
