North Canton council discusses golf proposal

R&S Golf Properties wants to run Fairways

By Dottie McGrew
Special to the Beacon Journal

NORTH CANTON: The city is reviewing a proposal for a new operator for its golf course.

The City Council on Monday discussed a plan from R&S Golf Properties Inc., whose principals are Scott DeMuesy and Rob Purcell of North Canton.

DeMuesy and Purcell have handled the day-to-day business of the Fairways for almost two years while Kevin Larizza operated the 18-hole golf course under a five-year lease agreement with the city.

Larizza chose not to exercise an option to renew the contract. The city rejected a bid from 2Club Golf of Ohio LLC, which would have reconfigured the Fairways into a nine-hole course with a driving range and putt-putt golf.

R&S Golf proposes to pay the city $150,000 annually to lease the course, with $50,000 of that sum earmarked for property taxes. The city would receive $100,000 a year. R&S would pay the insurance, make minimal capital improvements, maintain the property and keep 20 percent of the profits after taxes and maintenance.

Mayor David Held said the city's goal has always been to preserve the course as a community asset and not spend money in the process.

''Considering the economic circumstances over the past five years, I think we have come out pretty well,'' Held said.

Larizza, who owns Chippewa Golf Course in Doylestown and manages Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn, owes the city ''in the neighborhood of $105,000 in unpaid taxes and lease payments,'' said city Finance Director Alex Zumbar.

The city will send Larizza a letter this week detailing the balance due, Zumbar said.

The city paid $4.2 million for the former Arrowhead Country Club in 2003 and still owes about $900,000.
