MUNROE FALLS: The pedestrian bridge on State Route 91 over the Cuyahoga River has been closed to foot traffic.
City Service Director Larry Valentine made the decision Wednesday based on the condition of the hand rail on the structure's east side.
''We did close the bridge as a precautionary measure,'' Valentine said.
He said city officials had asked Ohio Department of Transportation officials about how to make temporary repairs.
But Valentine said ODOT said temporary repairs could not be made right away.
The bridge, he said, was not scheduled to be repaired for several years but ODOT has moved the work up to possibly next year.
''Hopefully we can come up with some kind of solution to make a temporary repair,'' he said.
The pedestrian walkway was added to the 1963-era bridge in 1978, ODOT spokesman Justin Chesnic said.
Valentine said the handrail is in bad shape.
''We don't want to take a chance of somebody falling in the river,'' he said.

Close the sidewalk so now people are walking over the bridge on the roadway. That's safer? Fix the handrail for goodness sake and now.
