Akron family's 13th Halloween free-for-all attracts horror film company, Summit model airplane club

The horror of Saturday night looked never ending.
Of course, that was the plan from the beginning for the DeBords' 13th annual Halloween party behind the VFW hall at West Waterloo Road in Akron.
The over-the-top, family-oriented and booze-free ghoulapalooza had something for everybody: live bands, pro wrestlers, fire dances, fire safety demonstrations, belly dancers, free food, fangs, pinball, a pair of Klingons, games, fog machines, strobe lights, real ghost hunters and costumed participants of all ages, sizes and undetermined genders.
Of course, there was more.
Actress Fallon Marie Mitchell (known to her Wooster-area family and friends as Danielle Nelson) and actor Mark Cray staffed tables promoting Ohio independent filmmaker Carl Merritt Productions with DVDs and T-shirts for sale. The small firm specializes in horror movies and shoots primarily in Ohio.
''This is our first time here,'' Cray said. ''I think it's great. There's been a lot of really great people here.''
Mitchell said she was more familiar with what she called Akron's tough side: ''This was a side of the Akron area I've never seen before. I wish I had my kids with me.''
The Summit County Corsair Model Aircraft Club was at the party for the first time, too. The 275-member group, which flies small, radio-controlled aircraft at the Summit County Fairgrounds, is in a dispute with Metro Parks officials over whether they can fly there next year.
''We thought, you know, let's try it. We are at home with this and the family atmosphere,'' said John Ashley, club trustee. ''Community support is our best ally.''
Host Claude DeBord said he was happy with how the event was turning out. He said it takes more than 250 hours of planning for the event which officially started at 5 p.m., though people began arriving as early as 2.
''It's been a steady stream,'' he said as night fell and the air grew chilly. ''I think it's a little bigger this year.''
