AKRON: The Akron schools' Teresa Noland, a member of the first-ever All-County Teaching Team, was named the 2008 Teacher of the Year on Monday at the Summit County Education Celebration at the University of Akron.
Eric Tilson of Woodridge Schools was named Rookie of the Year, and the Lifetime Educator Achievement Award went to Dr. Sylvester Small, retired superintendent of Akron Public Schools.
''I am greatly humbled and honored to accept as a representative of the quality teachers and education found in the Akron Public Schools,'' Noland said.
Crediting her academic start as an Akron school pupil and later a University of Akron student, she said ''they gave me the foundation.''
Noland has taught in Akron for 20 years — 18 years at Glover Elementary. She has been involved with numerous activities, committees and in leadership roles, such as serving as her school's computer tech coordinator, participating on the School Improvement Planning Committee and chairing the accelerated reader program.
Other nominated team members, with their school districts, include: Danielle Starkey, Barberton; Mary Jo Worthington, Copley-Fairlawn; Rebecca Dimeff, Coventry; Shirley Burris, Cuyahoga Falls; Erich Muzi, Green; Betty Banks-Burke, Hudson; Bradley Petraitis, Manchester; Bruce Parker, Mogadore; Janis Roskoph, Nordonia Hills; Harry Timms, Norton; Susan Alexander, Portage Lakes Career Center; John Faust, Revere; Paula Murphy, Springfield; Jeanette Ladner, Stow-Munroe Falls; Nancy Jones, Tallmadge; Lisa Milano, Twinsburg; Norma Hammond, Woodridge; Michael McDonald, St. Sebastian School, representing parochial schools; and MarySue Watson, Chapel Hill Christian School North, representing private schools.
Team members were nominated by their communities and chosen to represent their school systems by superintendents of each Summit County school district and a panel of sponsors.
