Community news
• The American Red Cross' National Measles Task Force Champions Network selected Hope Kostensky of Brimfield Township as a National Measles Champion. She collected $2,101 at a fundraiser at her Stow church last year, enough to buy measles shots for about 2,626 children in Africa and Asia. The 2008 graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School volunteers with the Summit County chapter of the Red Cross. School news
• Wadsworth resident Andrew David Farver was a member of the 2008 homecoming court at Ashland University. Farver, son of Tim and Pam Farver, is a senior finance major.
• Laura Jenkins and Spencer Davis, both of Akron, were admitted to Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization at the University of Akron.
• Megan Csiszar of Medina was elected secretary of Phi Sigma Iota, an honor society for foreign languages and literature at Ashland University. She is the daughter of Alex and Doreen Csiszar and is majoring in Spanish education.
• The Zonta Club of Akron, Barberton and Cuyahoga Falls awarded Cristina Croitoru, an undergraduate at the University of Akron, a book scholarship. OLena Lopatina, a doctoral candidate at Kent State University, received the Amelia Earhart Fellowship from Zonta International.
• Norton Middle School principal Joyce Gerber was named Administrator of the Year by the Ohio School Counselors' Association. Before joining the Norton district three years ago, she was a teacher and administrator for Akron schools.
• Wayne Gangi, son of Con-Way Freight driver sales representative Thomas Gangi of Alliance, received a $1,000 scholarship from the company. He is studying computer technology at Kent State's Salem campus, where he is a member of the Epsilon Pi Tau international honor society and received the Outstanding Computer Technology Student Award.
• Many Akron-area students were inducted into Delta Mu Delta, the national honor society in business administration, at Ashland University. They include Frank Alexander, Kurt Burner, Gregory Habib and Leonardo Araujo of North Canton; and Gregory Arnold, Corrice Caudill, Katrina Cerny, David Duve, Stacy Houston, Sean Miller, Julie Storti and Matthew Cameron of Medina.
Also, Stephen Downey of Canal Fulton; Michelle Durtschi, David Vinson and Lauren Jogoditz of Akron; Katie Hendricks of Wadsworth; Mark Jacobs of Beach City; Christopher McLain, Christopher Murillo and Stephanie Mottice of Massillon; Kimberly Smith of Canton; and Erin Vogel of Navarre.
Military news
• Air Force Airman Darrius J. Wilson, son of Yovonne Wilson of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2000 graduate of Akron Garfield High School.
• Deanna L. Stowe was promoted to senior airman in the U.S. Air Force. Her parents are Julie Policastro of Trappe, Pa., and Ronald Stowe of Beloit, Ohio; grandparents are Sherry Thiebault of Alliance and Joretta Stowe of Beloit.
• Air Force Reserve Airman Ianto Hill, son of Melvyn Anderson of Massillon, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2006 graduate of Washington High School in Massillon.
• Army Pvt. Matthew Pittman, son of John and Vicki Pittman of Ravenna, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of Ravenna High School.
• Navy Seaman Gary C. Edwards, son of Juliet and stepson of Ronald Stalnaker of Uniontown, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2008 graduate of Green High School.
• Army Pvt. Christopher L. Benson, son of Twila Brenner of Canton and Ronald Benson of Massillon, graduated from basic training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
• Three siblings graduated from basic training in the Army. Spc. Benjamin Neely graduated from Fort Benning, Ga.; Pfc. Kristen Neely and Pfc Nicholas Neely graduated from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. All are the children of Mike Neely of Manchester and Linda Neely of Doylestown and the grandchildren of John and Jean Neely of Doylestown. All graduated from Chippewa High School.
