NBC's Williams focuses on visit

Other news outlets give rally usual treatment

By Rich Heldenfels
Beacon Journal popular culture writer

For the most part, network coverage of the McCain/Palin rally in Green was business as usual. The major exception was NBC, which brought its NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams and NBC News political director Chuck Todd to town.

Williams interviewed McCain and Palin in Green for telecast Wednesday night and perhaps several nights to come. On Tuesday, on his blog, he even invited viewers to suggest questions.

On the cable networks Wednesday afternoon, live coverage of the rally was for the most part confined to shots of the crowd and speakers, often on a split screen with footage of other news.

Coverage of the rally had to battle for airtime with the latest stock-market developments and, to a lesser degree, reports of shots fired on the campus of Western Kentucky University.

Locally, TV stations stayed with their regular programming during the 4 p.m. hour as the candidates spoke. WOIO (Channel 19) offered some brief live coverage, but it had a local news hour at that time in which to package coverage.

While other local stations chose not to carry the event live on the air, WJW (Channel 8), WEWS (Channel 5) and WKYC (Channel 3) offered live, streaming video of the rally on their Web sites with varying success. Channel 3 seemed to have the most problems and at one point was offering streaming video from CNN instead of its own.

For the most part, network coverage of the McCain/Palin rally in Green was business as usual. The major exception was NBC, which brought its NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams and NBC News political director Chuck Todd to town.

Brian Williams on Imus Show this morning and on the Rachel Meddow show last night subtly expressed is utter disdain for Palin and McCain.

Williams no doubt will be voting Obama/Biden..I wonder why? Now Williams makes way more than 250K a yr. and would be taxed higher under Obama's plan.

He's obviously a proven intelligent and respected man and watched by millions.. perhaps he knows that Obama will move this country in the right direction and then Williams won't have to report unnecessary disaster after disaster created by the greed and out-of-touchness with our current administration (ie: McCain Term 3 of Bush) , or have to endure the negative perception we have in countries abroad when he travels.

Or maybe he's just a "Socialist" a "Communist" a "Wealth Spreader" "Elitist" ..Maybe he likes his money less than other people like theirs…

These word in quotes are McCain/Rove tactical one-liner cheerleader type words created to "cloud the mind and stick" to the simple and ignorant mind who doesn't feel like looking at history (even recent history) or simply refusing to see that more of the same will get you more of the same.. "Forget about the truth lets getem' all riled up redneck style" like Bush did to me. so I can be President before I die and leave Hockey mom ..who doesn't even know what the job of the Vice President entails to be President of the United States of America" Yeah
