Michelle Obama to visit Buchtel High

Principal says rally will be educational, unique opportunity

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

Two days after the GOP presidential ticket drew a huge crowd to Green High School, Michelle Obama, the wife of Sen. Barack Obama, will visit Akron's Buchtel High School.

And, as at Green, Buchtel leaders are looking at the event as an educational opportunity for students, staff and the community.

''I do think this is the chance of a lifetime for them,'' said Deborah Houchins, Buchtel's principal.

Michelle Obama is filling in for her husband, who is foregoing campaign stops to spend time with his gravely ill grandmother in Hawaii.

The rally will be at 3:30 p.m. today in the David W. Appleby Gym of the 1040 Copley Road school. Doors open at 2 p.m.

Tickets are not required but people are encouraged to RSVP on the campaign's Web site.

''We're very excited about it,'' said Wayne Jones, chairman of the Summit County Democratic Party. ''Michelle is not a bad No. 2.''

Jones suggested several
possible sites to the campaign, including the John S. Knight Convention Center, which was booked, and the Highland Theatre, which was deemed too small.

Houchins only learned Wednesday afternoon that Buchtel had been chosen.

''We are elated,'' she said.

Michelle Obama will hold an event at Capital University in Columbus this morning and will then fly into the Akron Fulton International Airport.

This will be her second Akron campaign visit. She spoke at North High School prior to the March 4 primary.

Keary McCarthy, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, said he doesn't know if Obama or running mate Sen. Joe Biden will make another trip to Northeast Ohio before the Nov. 4 election. He said stops are being planned only a few days in advance.

''Obviously, Summit County and Northeast Ohio are very important for us,'' he said.

Buchtel High students will have a normal schedule today, with school letting out about 3 p.m. — just before the rally begins.

This is Buchtel's homecoming week, and a pep rally scheduled for the gym had to be moved to the auditorium because of Obama's visit. The game — against Garfield High — will be at 7 p.m. at the Rubber Bowl.

Houchins said students and staff will have time to go to both the campaign appearance and the game. She said she and other staff have been encouraging students to attend.

''They're being part of history in the making,'' she said.

Houchins said Michelle Obama is a positive role model for the school's students, most of whom are African-American. She said they will be able to see an African-American woman ''who could become the first lady.''

Buchtel's band and cheerleaders will participate in the rally. Houchins said students are nearly as excited about the event as they are about the school's homecoming festivities.

''It's the buzz around here,'' she said. ''No matter what stance a person takes politically, this is a unique opportunity for the school to be part of history and to be spotlighted in this community — and possibly throughout the nation.''

This is one of Akron worst schools. Too bad they do not get that excited about academics.

Now now, thee's nuthin' wrong with Buchtel High School. The children certainly don't use it, so it'll be a pleasant change for the old buildin' to have it actually used for sumthin' other than a teenage daycare and part time drug emporium.

I am so sick of all the racist comments being made about Buchtel. How many of you have ever actually been to Buchtel? As a parent of a former Buchtel graduate, I am at the school quite a bit and the things that you people keep repeating are simply not true. I bet our kids are just as well behaved if not more behaved than the suburban kids. The only difference is that when your kids get in trouble it does not make the BJ headlines and when our children get in trouble, it is not look at as a childish prank. As for Michele Obama coming to Buchtel, I think that it is a wonderful opportunity and I can't wait to get there. And by the way, all the kids that go to school there are not thugs, the kids there got over 1 million dollars in scholarship money last year, my daughter among them.

A house divided against itself can not stand. That quote comes from one of your favorite sons, Abraham Lincoln, as well as from my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I am worried that in the U.S. everything is based on the color of a man's skin not on what is in his heart, how sad. Wha a nation of moral hypocrites. I read the other day that McBush and Palin hyping people up to rowdiness is on the level of George Wallace's segregation speaches of the '60s. We certainly have came a long way in 40 years. To Michelle Obama, woman of God, wife, mother, daughter, sister, and attorney. We thank you for coming. As a Buchtel alumni you are so welcome. Incoming First Lady we are behind you. God Bless.

cloverfield

Posted 10:25 AM, 10/24/2008

Linda, where do I begin. If you want to see "hyping up to rowdiness," look no further than when Obama told his faithful disciples to "get in their faces" when discussing politics with those that disagree. It's an awful shame for someone of your "Godly" stature to so adamantly support a guy who fought to protect doctors that took born babies that survived an attempted abortion, and left them in a room to die. Obama refused to even call them "babies,"referring to them rather as "previable fetuses."

I'm wondering where all the libs are that were complaining a few days ago that McCain/Palin held a rally at Green High School, stating that no political candidates should use public schools for their political agenda/election campaign. These same people seem unusually quiet today...

cloverfield

Realtalk, your comments are ignorant, absurd, and just plain stupid. If you want to (again) incite race, then let's talk race...and the fact that there are far more people in this election supporting Obama just because he's black than there are not supporting him because of his skin color. Where were you and all your anti-racist talk when Bush was making history by naming the first two black Secretaries of State?

Funny how conservatives always get the racist label, but libs are always the first ones to incite race under any circumstance. That's ok...we'll take our un-racist record of ending slavery and creating the most racially diverse presidential cabinets in the history of the country, and you can take the Democrats' record of fighting to defend racism, and continuously voting for politicians like Robert Byrd, who was a former grand kleagle of the KKK, or Bill Clinton, "the first black president," who wouldn't appoint anyone who wasn't white to his cabinet...

linda

Posted 11:05 AM, 10/24/2008

Sean, there is a big difference in discussing the issues as rational adults and screaming off with their head, or kill the man. As for backing Obama, I don't know about you but I believe we need to make a positive change. In my opinion Obama is probably one of the most qualified candidates we have had to vote for in many a year. After all this America and all of us have the right to vote for who we choose. And I might add and have our vote counted. Sean happy voting.

I don't know if Buchtel is a good school or not, I just haven't heard great things about.

Maybe I'm biased because I am a PROUD graduate of North High School. GO VIKINGS!!!

I think we need to quit squabbling amongst ourselves and just agree that something NEEDS TO CHANGE for things to get better in this economy.

I hope Michelle Obama has a nice time in ohio.

Michelle Obama is one of the reasons I don't see Barack as "black" Barack doesn't strike me as being a big fan of greasy foods, he doesn't play the horn, I doubt he can dance and he doesn't bang fat, ugly white girls. Bill Clinton was W-A-Y blacker than Barack. Barack is whiter than bleached linens; Joe the Plumber looks like minority trash compared to Barack. If you go by academic achievement, Barack is even whiter than McCain & Palin. If I were a white supremacist, I'd vote for Barack, the REAL white guy running this year.

Ed, I'm pretty sure the "guns" comments was made about crime in general, and the fact that inner city Akron schools have a lot more of it than the average schools (aka: you don't seen Green, Lake, Hudson, etc. students having to go through metal detectors in junior high). Any relation to guns and race was made by you, not the person that made the comment. So who really is thinking racially?

cloverfield

Posted 01:24 PM, 10/24/2008

Linda, who was screaming "off with their head" or to kill someone? If you're referring to the comment one person claimed hearing, you maybe missed all the stories that came out after where this incident thoroughly investigated by Secret Service and the police, and no one else heard what one person allegedly claimed was said. And if you're going to use examples like this, maybe you also missed the story about the McCain volunteer who had a "B" carved into her face by a robber because she had a McCain/Palin bumper sticker.

Please...look at every side of the story if you're using examples. Quit picking and choosing what news to read.

cloverfield

Posted 01:29 PM, 10/24/2008

Realtalk, QUIT TYPING IN ALL CAPS! YOU'RE ONLY EXPOSING YOUR IRRATIONAL ANGER!

You probably meant to say you're not racist, but the comment "IM BY FAR RACIST" looks like it may have been a Freudian slip on your part, judging by everything else you've said, and how you seem to see racism in everyone endorsing McCain/Palin.

Also, I don't remember any resentment from "White America" about Colin Powell or Condolleezza Rice's respected positions in the White House. Actually, yeah I did...from Democrats...

Also, do you hope that there is no cheating at the polls, or hope that "they" don't cheat at the polls? Because there has not been a single case of voter fraud from Republicans over the last two elections. All the alleged BS has been proven false. However, there has already been a TON of illegal voter fraud by ACORN this election period. You may recall Obama's involvement with them? It was pretty much his only resume enhancer...

cloverfield

Posted 01:31 PM, 10/24/2008

Linda, please provide evidence as to why Obama is "one of the most qualified candidates we have had to vote for in many a year." I have yet to see any evidence supporting this claim, which has to be one of the most absurd I've heard this entire election cycle, and I've heard A LOT of absurd claims...

@ sean

You make no sense, of course there is more crime at those schools, but pointing it out in a particular manner can bring up overtones, especially in a forum post, of racism. It's one thing to say that Buchtel has a high crime rate, it's another to say it with ebonics as is the case with Beta, or take a stab at racism AGAIN by Georgiana with her comments about Obama being a Muslim, which just isn't true. So before you comment, you should maybe read everything first.

Police sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter "B" in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker [...]

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

The commander added that Todd will face charges;
So she is a LIAR and RACE BAITER.

You might notice that I was citing one person, not everyone. And I never claimed that one person's comments stood for everyone's. However, I did state that the comment about guns was not racist. You brought the others into this. I was correct in my statement, and if you associate guns and a certain race, that is your racist premonition.

Obamas have to be in agreement with Jeremiah Wright's Hate-Whites screaming hate speech, to have stayed there for 20 years plus.

I'm caucasian and if I went to a church and heard Hate-Blacks screaming and ranting EVEN ONCE from the "pastor", I would LEAVE and never come back.
