New monitor project
CLEVELAND: The Cleveland Clinic and Microsoft Corp. will launch a pilot project to monitor the health of patients with diabetes, hypertension and heart failure from home.
The collaboration links Microsoft HealthVault and the eCleveland Clinic My chart, the hospital's electronic personal health record system. It allows patients to use glucometers, heart rate monitors, weight scales and blood pressure monitors that are connected to their home computer so their doctor can view the results.
The Cleveland Clinic plans to enroll about 400 patients, who will be selected by their doctor.
''This pilot is intended to demonstrate that utilization of our comprehensive PHR [personal health record] system can empower patients and physicians to better communicate and manage chronic conditions, improve efficiencies and hopefully lower costs,'' said Dr. C. Martin Harris, the clinic's chief information officer.
