COLUMBUS: Water and sewer rates are going up for Ohio American Water Co. customers throughout the state, including Portage County.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved an agreement Wednesday that allows the company to increase its water rates an average of 30 percent and its wastewater rates an average of 36.9 percent for Portage customers.
The company has customers in Brimfield and Shalersville townships.
In approving the agreement, the commission concluded that the rate increase should enable the company to recover expenses while improving water quality. The agreement also includes specific commitments that are designed to address water quality and service issues.
