Letter from slain woman found in search of Akron man's truck
By Phil Trexler
Beacon Journal staff writer
Published on Thursday, Nov 20, 2008
Edwin Gene Posey appeared distraught over his breakup as he worked inside his Akron garage early Tuesday morning.
He soon drove his red GMC pickup truck to Tracy Schley's home in Coventry Township, forced his way inside and shot his former love as she called 911 for help.
Posey then used the .38-caliber gun to shoot himself in the head.
Schley was found dead inside her bedroom; Posey was found unconscious in the living room. He remains on life support at Akron General Medical Center.
A letter written by Schley to Posey ending their long relationship was still inside the Akron man's truck parked outside the woman's home, according to a Summit County sheriff's search warrant affidavit filed Wednesday.
Schley's 8-year-old son, Evan, might have witnessed his mother's death. He was inside the house as deputies arrived at the Lakota Avenue home.
Detectives intend to await Posey's fate before deciding whether to interview the boy.
Sheriff's Inspector Keith Thornton said Posey, 53, is on life support.
''From what I'm told, he's in very grave condition,'' Thornton said Wednesday. ''The outcome of his condition . . . we're awaiting that.''
The affidavit filed by deputies in Common Pleas Court shows investigators went to an auto shop/apartment building at 1902 Manchester Road where Posey lived at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
A neighbor told deputies that Posey ''appeared to be upset over a recent ending of a relationship'' as he worked in a garage after midnight Tuesday.
By 4:20 that morning, deputies say Posey was breaking into Schley's home.
Schley, 41, the stepdaughter of retired University of Akron police chief William Lohrum Jr., suffered gunshot wounds to her abdomen and head. Schley's son was not harmed and is staying with his grandparents.
Lohrum declined comment when contacted Wednesday.
The search warrant affidavit states that after the killing, detectives searched Posey's truck where a ''letter written from [Schley] to [Posey] was found. In the letter, Tracy Schley ends her relationship with Edwin Posey.''
Detectives obtained the search warrant from Judge Patricia A. Cosgrove hours after the killing.
According to the filing, detectives wanted to search Posey's home for .38-caliber bullets, documents relating to ''Posey's intent of harm toward'' Schley, illegal contraband and video recordings from Posey's surveillance system.
An inventory sheet shows detectives recovered three boxes of ammunition and items used to manufacture methamphetimines. Posey has previously been convicted of cocaine trafficking.
Thornton said detectives might never need to interview Schley's son about the slaying, if Posey's death closes the case.
''There's no rush to do that,'' Thornton said of the potential interview with the child. ''I would question whether it has to been done, if [Posey] dies. As far as talking to the child, a lot depends on whether this guy lives or dies.''
Detectives say Posey broke into the home through a rear door around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Tracks left in the snow show just one person entered the home. There were no signs of a struggle inside.
In a recording of Schley's 911 call, she is heard saying, ''You need to go now.''
She tells a dispatcher that someone broke into her home. A male believed to be Posey then tells Schley to get off the phone. Seconds later, Schley is shot twice and Posey then shoots himself.

Methamphetamines.
I used 2 buy bait off the guy knew him as a member of Potage Lakes Fitness Club. He seemed 2 B a pretty nice person. It's obvious the man had a drug problem and the rest is history. Thank God he didn't take out that fine little boy. People never quit making me wonder they R capable of doing 2 others and 2 themselves. What a crying shame that this ever happened. Just stay away from drugs folks......
it's sucks to see things like this happen... especially for the child. Mike, you are right, stay away from drugs!
The good news is that in another story here it states that Posey died. Justice has been served!
My condlences go out to the Schey family - there are no words that can possibly express the horror that you are going through. I am very very sorry for your loss. I am reading all of the comments about Eddy Posey and felt compelled to write. The Eddy Posey I remember was one of the most caring people in the world. He had a sense of humor and purpose which at that time was his family. He was devoted to his wife and two children. He gave his daughter away at her wedding and cried and saw his son join the military! He wasn't perfect by any means but he was human. He was reliable. Then one day it all changed - maybe 10 years ago, his daughter, his oldest and one of the most special people in his life, died of cancer while still in her 20's. One morning she woke up and was bleeding from everywhere - the next day she was dead. There was no warning - no preperation - there was only time to say goodbye to her before the doctors induced a coma which would soon take her life. From that point forward, the Eddy that we all knew and loved went away as well. His marriage couldn't handle the strain and he is wife who were very much in love divorced. He lost the home that he and his wife spent years building on Long Lake. He found his solace in cocaine and it appears eventually in meth. I am not writing this to make excuses or to take away from the horrible act that Eddy committed. I remember his most used word was "punk" - he hated them yet that's what he has become. Was it drugs, it was. Was it heart break and unbearable loss, it was. Was it evilness, I dont think so. So when you are reading about Eddy I am not asking for sympathy - just understanding and perspective. There is loss from both familes that will never go away. I remember the Eddy that was and it's a shmae that so many people in our community won't.
However, "Ms" It is so hard to be understandable when there is so much help available. So many resources a distraught individual can turn to for HELP!! Can you imagine what this world would turn into if everyone who had issues of some sort or another just started murdering innocent people in an attempt to feel better....or whatever their crazy goal is....???
Of course P you are right - there are plenty of resources in our community. I am not trying to justify what Eddy did, it was horrible and yes there were alternatives. I can't imagine what was going through his mind. If anything I hope that this story serves as a lesson for people everywhere who are dealing with an immense loss to get help that is available. More than one person died that Spring morning when April passed. Unfortunately, that legacy continued. I can only hope that Ms. Shey's son has the strength going forward to end the cycle. My prayers are with him and his family and all those that loved Ms. Schey. If you are reading this article and see a story that resembles either yourself or someone that you love please get the help that is available.
What a horrific tragedy for both of these families. Especially the little boy. My heart goes out to all of them. I imagine it's human nature to see someone as a monster when you hear a story like this, I know I do the same thing. But I actually knew Eddie, and he wasn't a monster at all. I knew him as a really nice guy, always willing to help someone out. Next time I read a story like this, I'll have to remember that a person is a sum of ALL their actions, not just the ones that end up in the paper. I just talked to him sunday and had no clue he would end up doing something like this.
Thanks Ms for the backround. Alot of times we read about people in the news and wonder how they got to that point. Thanks for the insight. My prayers are with all of the families.
First of all, my heart completely goes out the the Schey family. Especially to that little boy. I am writing this because i need to. I also knew Eddie and his entire family, including beautiful April. My dad was Eddies best friend, and hes been like an uncle to me my whole life. My heart is torn when i read the comments because if i didnt know this man like i did I wouldve probably said the same things. I dont know what was going thru his mind when he finally snapped but everything MS said was true. Eddie was the kindest most generous man in the world. And Im not making excuses for him, his life took a really bad turn. With his death comes more pain for his beautiful family. For his ex wife and his son, Who i also know and love. Im not asking anyone to feel sympathy for him because the victim and her family and that little boy definitely deserve the sympathy here. But im just writing to say that sometimes things arent black and white. I will miss the Eddie I know and loved, and i will never be able to think of him as a monster. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But as a girl who has known this man for 29 years Im also entitled to mine. God bless the families in both parties.
Seems like Eddy was a giver-I even experienced that of him earlier this summer, while moving furniture,he yelled out to us while passing by-"you all need some help"...I didnt know the guy from Adam as he didnt know me...just sitting here shaking my head, and wondering...WHY ???
I bought bait from him as a teen, and even a pole once, if I recall. You never know.
Now the poor child of God, will be suffering.May our father sheild and comfort him, 4 the rest of his life.
