New Franklin blazes still being probed

Two points of origin found, fire chief says

By Bill Lilley
Beacon Journal staff writer

The fires that destroyed a New Franklin residence and hospitalized the homeowner for two days are still under investigation.

''We have found at least two points of origin, with the origin of the original fire in the basement area,'' New Franklin Fire Chief Perry Surgeon said Thursday.

''But at this point, that's all the information we can release. It's still a suspicious fire and the investigation is ongoing.''

The New Franklin Fire Department received a call at 9:21 p.m. Monday about a fire at the one-story home of David Messner at 5508 Pepperidge Road.

Firefighters from New Franklin, Coventry Township and Clinton put the blaze out at about 1 a.m.

Surgeon said that at that point there was significant damage to the basement and smoke damage to the first floor.

A second fire erupted in the roof at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters from New Franklin, Green, Coventry and Clinton battled that blaze until about 9 a.m.

At that time, Surgeon said the second fire was caused by a hot spot missed in the inspection that followed the first blaze.

Messner's home was destroyed, resulting in a loss of more than $100,000, Surgeon said.

A spokeswoman for Akron Children's Hospital said Messner was admitted Tuesday for ''observation'' and discharged Wednesday.

Surgeon said firefighters ''need to talk to the homeowner and get a statement from him'' as part of the investigation.
