Suspect in slaying dies

Investigation of fatal Coventry Twp. shootings nearing end

By Phil Trexler
Beacon Journal staff writer

Sheriff's detectives are winding down their investigation into this week's shooting death of a Coventry Township mother.

Edwin Gene Posey, 53, the Akron man suspected of killing his former girlfriend, Tracy A. Schley, early Tuesday morning and then shooting himself, has died.

Posey, who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, was taken off life support Wednesday night. His body was taken to the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Schley recently had ended her relationship with Posey before he broke into her home and shot her as she called 911. Schley's 8-year-old son, Evan, was inside the home but was not harmed.

The child is staying with Schley's mother and stepfather, Desnay and William Lohrum Jr., the former University of Akron police chief.

Funeral services will be held Saturday for Schley, 41.

Sheriff's Inspector Keith Thornton said detectives will await final autopsy reports and forensic tests before officially closing the investigation.

Because of Posey's death, detectives do not intend to talk to Schley's son about what he might have seen the night his mother was killed, Thornton said.

''The child is in good hands and he's getting good treatment,'' he said. ''He's being cared for by people who love and care about him.''

Drug investigation

Detectives say that they are familiar with Posey and were investigating him recently for possible methamphetamine manufacturing. Detectives searching his Manchester Road home after the killing recovered evidence used in the making of meth.

Schley was not being investigated.

In addition to the meth components, detectives recovered a letter in which Schley recently ended her relationship with Posey. The letter was inside Posey's pickup truck when he parked outside Schley's home before the shooting.

A neighbor told deputies that Posey appeared upset about the breakup about four hours before the shooting.

''[The letter] was in effect her ending the relationship, saying she wanted nothing more of the relationship,'' Thornton said. '' 'I don't want to see you anymore, I don't want to be with you anymore, it's over.' She wanted to end the relationship. She didn't love him or trust him.''

Suspect's past

Court records show that Posey, who formerly ran a bait and tackle store near the Portage Lakes, was divorced in 2005. Six years earlier, he, his wife, Lorene, and their son, Jason, talked to the Beacon Journal about the death of Posey's daughter, April, an area artist who died suddenly of leukemia at age 27.

Authorities say Posey and Schley dated for several years, but she never called authorities expressing any fear of him prior to her 911 call about 4:20 a.m. Tuesday.

During that conversation with a dispatcher, Schley is heard calmly telling Posey he needs to go and calmly telling a dispatcher that someone broke inside her Lakota Avenue home. Schley then is shot twice.

Posey then fired a single shot into his head.
