State provides funds for six park projects

Beacon Journal staff report

Six park projects in the Akron area are getting nearly $179,000 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

In Summit County, New Franklin is getting $40,852 to clear, grade, seed, fence and add backstops to two Little League ballfields at George H. Sisler Memorial Baseball Park.

Three projects in Stark County will receive funds: $31,561 for a handicapped-accessible walking track in Canton Township; $7,000 to Minerva to purchase and install skate park equipment; and $5,286 to Alliance for a play area, shelter and skate park at Memorial Park.

In Medina County, Montville Township qualified for $56,560 to develop six baseball fields and a walking track at Cobblestone Park.

In Portage County, Ravenna is getting $37,510 to develop a playground.

In all, the state awarded $1.7 million to 90 parks in 58 counties through the 2008 NatureWorks Grant Program.

The program will provide up to 75 percent funding for park acquisition, development and rehabilitation. Park districts must provide 25 percent.

The NatureWorks program is funded through a state bond issue.
