GAR Foundation approves $2.2 million in donations

AKRON: The GAR Foundation has approved more than $2.2 million in grants for 20 nonprofit organizations at its quarterly meeting.

The latest distribution brings the total awarded by the foundation in 2008 to $8.6 million.

The following organizations received grant awards:

Akron Public Schools, $1,128,000 for instructional equipment and professional development for STEM Middle School.

Ashland University, $80,000 for the Positive Development and Behavior Supports program and Greenspan/Floortime training.

Cascade Locks Park Association, $25,000 for operations.

Catholic Social Services of Summit County, $20,000 for the Family Life program.

Center for Nonprofit Excellence, $140,000 for community capacity-building activities in 2008-09.

Summit Choral Society, $20,000 for the 2008-09 season.

Community Hall Foundation, Inc., $50,000 for the 2008-09 season.

Foundation Center, $6,000 for operations.

Boys Hope Girls Hope of Northeastern Ohio, $50,000 for operations in 2009 and endowment.

JumpStart, Inc., $25,000, for Development of IdeaCrossing 2.0.

STEPS at Liberty Center, $10,000 for renovation of Lorson House, a residential facility for chemically dependent men.

National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation, $179,000 for Camp Inventions and Club Inventions at Akron Public Schools in 2009.

Northeast Ohio Dance, Inc., $6,000 for scholarship aid.

Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, Inc., $100,000 for a planning grant for the Akron Bridges program and scholarships for Summit County students attending one of the 12 Northeast Ohio OFIC institutions.

OPEN M, $40,000 for operations of OPEN M's free clinic.

Project: All Reading Children, Inc., $20,000 for operations.

Project LEARN of Summit County, $30,000 for operations.

Rebuilding Together Summit County, Inc., $50,000 for operations and AmeriCorps Service.

Service Corps of Retired Executives, $30,000 for operations.

United Way of Summit County, $267,500 for the 2008-09 annual campaign.

The GAR Foundation is a private, independent foundation established in 1967 as a charitable trust by Galen J. Roush, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Roadway Express, and his wife, Ruth.

Since its inception, GAR has distributed more than $161 million to support charitable organizations within the Foundation's areas of interest.
