Community news
• Willette Riley of Akron received the Outstanding Service Award from the Ohio chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. She is a community resource specialist with Akron's planning and urban development department.
Other Summit County winners were Debra Manteghi of Akron, Social Worker of the Year; Jim Stilson of Akron, Lifetime Achievement Award; Andrea Wlaszyn of Akron, Public Citizen of the Year; Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, Public Elected Official; Tim Edgar of Akron, Master's Degree Student of the Year; and Scott Brinkman of Copley, Bachelor's Degree Student of the Year. • Brittany Johnson of Northfield, Jessica Kidder of East Canton, Paige Romito of Twinsburg, Cassandra Sewell of Dalton and Elizabeth Werry of North Canton are members of the education society Kappa Delta Pi at Ashland University.
• Several Kent State faculty members were recognized at the university's Celebrating College Teaching conference. Irene Gianakos, an associate professor of psychology at the Trumbull campus; Kimberly Schimmel, an associate professor of exercise, leisure and sport at the Kent campus; and Thomas Sosnowski, an associate professor of history at the Stark campus, were named the 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award winners. Barbara Andreas, a professor of biological sciences at the Kent campus; Mary Beth Rollick, an assistant professor of mathematical sciences at the Kent campus, and Jon Secaur, an assistant professor of physics at the Kent campus, were named the 2008 Outstanding Teaching Award Winners.
• Kate DeJesus of Akron was one of 40 students recognized for grades, community service and leadership this month by the East Carolina University College of Allied Health Sciences. She is a graduate student in the physical therapy department.
• The American Academy of Family Physicians named Dr. William A. Ellert as the 2009 Family Physician of the Year. Ellert received his medical degree from the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy in Roostown. He is project director and board chairman for the nonprofit Circle the City organization that helps the ailing homeless in Maricopa County, Ariz.
• David Andrew DiCesare of Medina is a new member of the Golden Key International Honour Society at the University of Akron. He was inducted this fall. • English and journalism teacher Julie Headrick and family and con sumer science teacher Kim Carlson were named Teachers of the Year for 2007-08 at Tallmadge High School. Headrick joined the high school staff in 2000 and oversees the school newspaper and yearbook. Carlson joined the school in 1990 to teach life lessons, healthy and safe foods, financial management and more. Both are graduates of Tallmadge High.
Military news
• Army National Guard Pvt. Adam J. Waterhouse, son of Donna Waterhouse of Akron, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., to be a member of the Army National Guard or Reserve Split-option Program. He is a student at Ellet High School in Akron.
• Air National Guard Airman Rachael E. Hendershott, daughter of Diana Hendershott of Canton and granddaughter of Miriam Hendershott of Alliance, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2007 graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Louisville.
• Army Pvt. Anthony J. Carpenter, son of Clifford Carpenter of Hudson and Andrea Carpenter of Akron, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
• Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert C. Huffman, son of Charles T. Huffman of Akron, completed the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit course at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of Coventry High School.
• Navy Fireman Scott T. Cook completed the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit course at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C. He is a 1999 graduate of Uniontown High School.
• Navy Seaman Apprentice Ryan J. Miller, son of Julie K. Houston of Akron and Darin J. Miller of Carrollton, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2008 graduate of Carrollton High School.
• Army Reserve Pvt. Mark A. Belknap, son of Margaret Belknap of Ravenna and grandson of Laura Cox of Kent, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., to be a member of the Army National Guard or Reserve Split-option Program. He is a student at Ravenna High School.
• Air Force Airman Nicole M. Beck, daughter of John Beck of Uniontown and Vanessa Vatalaro of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2007 graduate of Coventry High School.
• Army Pvt. Bobby G. Shelton, son of Rebecca Raines of Garrettsville and brother of Leah Burgess of Portland, graduated from basic training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is a 2008 graduate of Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna.
