AKRON
Snow on agenda
AKRON: Residents of Ward 9 are invited tonight to attend a meeting with Councilman Mike Freeman to learn about the city's plans for snow and ice removal and a new snow removal program being offered to the elderly.
Akron has launched a program in which city workers will clear snow from the driveway approaches for residents who are physically unable to do so.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Kenmore Senior Community Center, 880 Kenmore Blvd.
Man assaulted
AKRON: A 53-year-old man was punched in the head and knocked to the ground when he refused to give money to a man at Cordova Avenue and Little Street, Akron police said.
The robber demanded money as the victim was walking to the store about noon Saturday, police said.
The robber fled without getting anything. The victim sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment.
Drug deal goes bad
AKRON: A 28-year-old Stow resident told police he was robbed of his money and car while trying to buy marijuana in South Akron Sunday night.
The victim said he he went to an address on Bellows Street about 9 p.m. and was assaulted and robbed of $180 and his 2002 Chevy Blazer. The vehicle was recovered and returned to the owner.
Holiday celebration
AKRON.: The Summit County Historical Society will host its Home for the Holidays celebrations from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sunday, Dec. 13 and Dec. 14.
The Simon Perkins Mansion and the Wash House will be decorated and open for tours at 465 S. Portage Path.
Tickets are $6 for adults; children under 12 are $4. Call 330-535-1120 for information.
Firestone Park fest
AKRON: The Firestone Park Christmas tree will be lighted at a ceremony from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Firestone Park Community Center, 1480 Girard St.
Frosty, Rudolph, a magician, face painting, stories, kids' crafts, a bake sale and food will be available. Santa will arrive at 7 by firetruck to help light the tree.
Cost is $4, or $1 for children 12 or younger with the donation of a nonperishable food item, $2 without the donation. Proceeds benefit the Firestone Park fireworks display fund.
Leaf pickup goes on
AKRON: Akron workers are forging ahead with the leaf pickup program.
Leaves are being collected from wards 8 and 2. Today collections will move into Ward 1.
Wards 10, 9, 8, 5 and 3 will follow in the coming days and weeks. The city expects leaf collection to continue into January because of the fall snow.

Goodbye for pastor
AKRON: A retirement celebration for the Rev. Ronald J. Fowler and his wife will be held Dec. 17, 19, 20 and 21 at Arlington Church of God, 539 S. Arlington St.
Fowler is retiring as senior pastor of the Akron church Jan. 1 after 38 years of service.
The preacher and community leader has frequently been called upon to assist in matters of racial harmony, both locally and nationally.
He and his wife, Joyce, will be honored at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 and 19 during a Church Family Celebration and Community Celebration, respectively. Bishop F. Josephus Johnson of Akron's House of the Lord will be the guest speaker at the community celebration.
A black-tie banquet for the couple will begin at 5 p.m. Dec. 20 at Quaker Station, 135 S. Broadway St. Bishop Timothy Clarke of Columbus will be the banquet speaker. Seating begins at 4 p.m.
Cost is $50 per person.

Holiday dinner
AKRON: Ward 4 Council-woman Renee Greene will host the annual holiday family covered-dish dinner from 6 to 8 tonight at the Lawton Street Community Center, 1225 Lawton St.
Guest speaker will be Ed Schneider, an attorney with Summit County who works with residents facing foreclosure.
Students from the Buchtel Neighborhood Youth Empowerment Group will be introduced.

Holiday fatalities
COLUMBUS: The State Highway Patrol said today that 11 people were killed in 11 crashes on Ohio roads during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
That's the lowest number of people killed during a Thanksgiving holiday period since 2001, when there were 10 fatalities.
Last year, there 17 traffic deaths during the period.
This year, six of those killed died in accidents on federal or state highways during the period from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Monday.
Three fatalities involved crashes on county roads. One person died in an accident on a city street. One fatality involved an interstate highway inside a city.The patrol arrested 501 people for drunk driving and helped 3,741 motorists over this past holiday weekend.

'Green' award given
BATH TWP.: John Farber, headmaster at Old Trail School, is a winner in the Entrepreneurs for Sustainability's Champions of Sustainability awards.
Farber was nominated for his efforts to make the Summit County school more environmentally friendly and green.
He was one of five winners honored by the Cleveland-based group.
Road bill paid off
BATH TWP.: Trustees have signed off on the third and final payment to Perrin Asphalt Co. for an Olentangy Drive reconstruction project.
The payment of $24,751 completes the contract, which totaled $234,802.

'In the Wild' exhibit
BOSTON TWP.: The Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association is sponsoring the photographic exhibit In the Wild by Akron Beacon reporter Bob Downing.
There will be an artist reception/opening from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Seiberling Gallery, 1403 W. Hines Hill Road, in the administrative offices.
Downing has been writing and taking pictures for the newspaper's outdoor travel column In the Wild for more than 10 years.
''The travel column has taken me from California and British Columbia to Maine and Florida and the Caribbean,'' Downing said. ''I have been to 37 states in search of interesting and special places to visit, photograph and write about.''
The exhibit runs through Jan. 15.
CANTON
Suspect surrenders
CANTON: A 30-year-old Canton man wanted in a fatal shooting Nov. 24 at the Victory Square apartment complex turned himself in to the Stark County Sheriff's Office early Friday.
Terez A. Averette, 1013 Eighth St. NE, arrested shortly after midnight and charged by Canton police with murder. Canton Municipal Judge John A Poulos set bail at $50,000.
Canton police said that Averette and two other men were at the complex on Eighth Street Northeast about 9:30 p.m. Nov. 24. Averette is accused of shooting Nathaniel Jackson, 54, during an altercation in a hallway at the complex.
The names of the other two men haven't been released.
Internet pact OK'd
CANTON: City Council on Monday authorized the administration to enter a contract with a local company to provide free wireless Internet service downtown.
The contract with Lightspeed Technologies LLC carries no cost to the city.
The company will be permitted to use the city's communications tower on 30th Street Northwest to relay its signal from Jackson Township to downtown.
Installation is expected soon, with testing expected in the winter and service to debut in the spring.
The signal is expected to be available between Ninth Street Southwest, McKinley and Cherry avenues and 12th Street Northwest and Northeast.
CLEVELAND
Resnik in card deck
CLEVELAND: The International Women's Air and Space Museum is selling a collectible deck of playing cards that features Akron astronaut Judith Resnik, who died in the 1986 Challenger disaster.
This is the museum's second book of playing cards. The first one was introduced in 2007 and sold out quickly. None of the women featured in the first deck is repeated in the new project, which is a museum fundraiser.
The decks sell for $10 in the museum gift shop at the Burke Lakefront Airport terminal, 1501 N. Marginal Road.

KENT
Show at planetarium
KENT: The Kent State Planetarium, 108 Smith Hall, will have The Skies of Winter: Holidays in the Planetarium at 8 p.m. Dec. 12-13.
The presentation will explore the winter skies and their connection to religious and cultural observances throughout the world.
The show, which is free, is not recommended for children under age 6. Seating is limited.
Reservations must be made by calling 330-672-2246. People who need special accommodations are asked to call at least a week in advance.
SEVILLE
Mayor resigns
SEVILLE: Mayor Conrad Sarnowski resigned and Council President Larry Landis was sworn in to replace him Monday.
Sarnowski, 57, said he resigned for health reasons. He has been mayor for nearly nine years and has worked for the village for 14 years. He said he intends to stay active in the community.
''I loved being mayor,'' he said. ''It was one of the toughest decisions I've ever made.''
Landis, 70, has been on the council for 11 years and ran for mayor nine years ago. He is looking forward to serving as mayor.
''It'll be a challenge because of the economy,'' he said.
The council will name a new president in a special meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The village is accepting letters of interest to fill Landis' council seat. Village Hall is at 120 Royal Crest Drive.
WADSWORTH
Clinic canceled
WADSWORTH: The Medina County Health Department has canceled the Dec. 24 immunization clinic at Founder's Hall at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital.
The next clinic will be Jan. 28 from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
The department provides immunization clinics in Wadsworth at the Steiner Youth Center on the first Wednesday of the month from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital's Founder's Hall on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Appointments for immunizations are recommended.
The Medina County Health Department accepts Medicaid, Care Source, Well Care, and Buckeye Community. Vaccines cost $10 for non-Medicaid Medina County residents and $15 for out-of-county residents. No child will be denied immunizations due to the inability to pay.
