AKRON
Couple arrested
AKRON: An Akron couple was arrested Thursday for offering to sell the chemical ingredients to make methamphetamines on the Internet.
Victor and Deborah Bittner were arrested by the Summit County Drug Unit, the Akron Police Department Narcotics Unit and the Drug Enforcement Administration following a yearlong investigation, the Summit County Sheriff's Office said.
Authorities obtained a warrant to search the couple's Curtis Street home. As a result of the search, investigators confiscated about 80 pounds of crystallized iodine, an ingredient needed to produce methamphetamine. The couple would have realized a profit of more than $18,500 if the chemical had been sold on eBay, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities removed two children from the home.
Iodine is a known cause of birth defects and kidney failure and Summit County Children's Services is investigating, the Sheriff's Office said.
Victor Bittner, 42, and Deborah Bittner, 46, both have prior convictions for the illegal assembly of chemicals and possession of drugs.
The two were booked into Summit County Jail.
Suspect nabbed
AKRON: Police arrested the Akron man wanted in Wednesday's fatal shooting outside a Manchester Road check-cashing store.
Brandon W. Smith, 18, of Kling Street, was arrested around 4:30 p.m. Thursday inside an Ericsson Avenue apartment.
Akron police, with help from the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and Summit County sheriff's deputies, arrested Smith without incident.
Police Lt. Rick Edwards said officers worked since Wednesday's fatal shooting of Dominic R. Johnson, 20, in seeking Smith.
Task force officers conducted hours of surveillance, checked numerous locations and conducted multiple interviews in an effort to locate Smith, police said.
Johnson, 20, was shot in the parking lot of Db's Check Mart at 1206 Manchester Road shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Police say Johnson and Smith were involved in an altercation earlier in the day. Smith returned with a handgun and fired several shots at Johnson, who ran from the scene.
Johnson was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 1000 block of La Croix Avenue. He was transported to Akron General Medical Center, where he later died.
Restaurant robbed
AKRON: A man robbed an Akron fast food restaurant Wednesday night, police said.
Workers at the KFC, 1526 Vernon Odom Blvd., said they were taking out the trash about 10:30 p.m. when a man intimating he was armed demanded money. The man had his hand in a pocket but no gun was seen.
Employees gave the robber an undisclosed amount of cash.
BRIMFIELD TWP.
Meth lab busted
BRIMFIELD TWP.: A Brimfield Township police officer's attempt to stop a possible drunken driver late Wednesday led to the bust of a methamphetamine lab in Suffield Township.
The suspect led officers from Brimfield, the Portage County Sheriff's Office and the State Highway Patrol on a chase before abandoning his pickup truck in Ravenna Township, Brimfield Police Chief David A. Blough said.
The vehicle was associated with a residence in the 2300 block of Martin Road in Suffield. At the home, Bradley Williams, 43, holed up inside a bedroom, keeping officers at bay for more than an hour. Officers had determined that Williams, not the driver of the vehicle, was wanted on a Summit County warrant for cocaine possession and a probation violation.
Officers found firearms in the home, as well as the meth lab. The lab was dismantled and removed by a cleanup crew.
Williams, who lived in the Martin Road home, was arrested on the outstanding warrant and taken to the Summit County Jail. He could face additional charges, Blough said.
David Carpenter, 18, who was staying at the home, was the vehicle's driver and has been charged with failure to comply and assembly of chemicals to manufacture methamphetamine. He was to be booked into the Portage County Jail.

STARK COUNTY
Partial budget OK'd
CANTON: Stark County commissioners passed temporary appropriations for 2009 on Thursday that are very close to figures approved a year ago.
The new $19.3 million partial budget differs mainly in the deletion of capital improvements that were part of this year's plan, said Richard Flory, the commissioners' budget manager.
Commissioners also approved plans for the coroner's office and morgue to be built at the county jail at an estimated cost of $402,829.
The morgue must move from the former Doctors Hospital in Perry Township because Affinity Medical Center decided to close the facility.
