Route 8 project to begin today

Lanes will be reduced as construction starts on turnpike interchange

By Rick Armon
Beacon Journal staff writer

Kenmore Construction Co. will begin work today on the $68.4 million project to build five bridges and a new interchange at state Route 8 and the Ohio Turnpike in Boston Heights.

Traffic will be reduced from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today — weather permitting — to one lane in each direction on Interstate 80 and one lane northbound on Route 8, the Ohio Department of Transportation said Tuesday.

Workers will remove a fence on Route 8 and install portable concrete barriers on the turnpike, closing off one lane there through the winter. Two lanes will remain open in each direction on the turnpike.

In addition to the new bridges and interchange, the three-year project includes eliminating intersections at Boston Mills and Hines Hill roads, extending Chittenden Road from Boston Mills to state Route 303, Please see Route 8, A4

and resurfacing Route 8 from Twinsburg Road to Route 303.

The major construction is expected to begin early next year, depending on the weather.

About 57,000 vehicles use that stretch of Route 8 each day.

Boston Heights Mayor Bill Goncy said the village already has met with contractors and ODOT and offered assistance to make sure the project goes smoothly. The village will meet again soon to discuss any potential issues for safety forces during the construction.

''I don't foresee really big problems,'' he said. ''I certainly hope that ODOT and the village and the contractors are going to be able to work together and rectify any issues that come up.''

He added that motorists will have to get used to the new road patterns during and after the construction.

The interchange project is part of ODOT's $262 million effort to transform Route 8 from Akron to Macedonia into a nonstop highway — as opposed to one with traffic lights and intersections. The multiyear effort involves interchange, bridge, signage and paving projects; shutting down access from side streets; and widening state Route 82 in Macedonia.

For more details about the overall project, go to http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/d04/ and click on the Route 8 icon. ODOT also is working on updating the Web page.

I feel sorry for those who must drive this route daily... If only they could finish one project before starting another.

Thats just the start of it. They will be working on the south side of 303 next year also. They'll be putting ramps off of SR8 up to Seasons Rd. So you will have construction zone from basically steels corners all the way to 271.

Uncle Ed does not understand how construction works as you keep moving people and equipment around to the part of the project that needs it. It saves a lot of money, people, and time. If they did a single piece of the project and move on, it would take many, many more years than it is now.
