Jack Rouse was named the 2008 Veteran of the Year and Colleen Lewis, Woman of the Year, by Pulaski Post 32 of the Polish Legion of American Veterans in Akron. Both were honored at a banquet this month.

• Trooper William F. Lee of the State Highway Patrol's Canton post received the Ace Award for auto larceny enforcement. He recovered five stolen vehicles with a combined value of $34,500 and apprehended five suspects in connection with the thefts.

Andrew McElroy, son of Kevin and Mary McElroy of Brady Lake, earned his Eagle Scout badge in the Boys Scouts. He helped the Portage County Park District clear trails, build a bridge, make and place sign posts and install gates at the new Seneca Ponds Park in Streetsboro. School news

Gary Wienecke of Wadsworth is secretary of the Interfraternity Council at Ashland University. He is the son of Duane Wienecke and Monica Bandura and is majoring in finance.

• Kent State's Daniel J. Flannery, director of the Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence, was appointed to the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Advisory Committee at the U.S. Department of Education. His term will run through June 2011.

• Several Akron-area residents were inducted in the Kappa Delta Pi educational honor society at Malone University: Mary Boosz and Kylee Bryan of Canton; Kelsey Carlile and Camilla Park of Alliance; Rachel Durst of Salem; Melinda Kutz of Dalton; Briana McConnell of Apple Creek; Paula Trippe of Barberton; and Allyson Wilson of Akron.

• Wadsworth resident Max Hiltner was recognized for his writing in a competition sponsored by Ashland University's John M. Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs. Hiltner, a junior majoring in history at Ashland, received third prize and $200 for his article.

Jennifer Messner of Aurora was an actress in the Denison University stage production of Something's Afoot in November. She is a junior who graduated from Aurora High School.

• Three Stark State College students received $1,000 merit scholarships from the American Health Information Management Association's Foundation of Research and Education. Sophomores Denise Blogna of Canton, Bruna Weber of Wadsworth and Denise Sturgeon of Canal Fulton are pursuing associate degrees in health information management.

• Ohio Magazine honored several Akron-area college and university faculty members in its Excellence in Education list in December. At Hiram College, the faculty members and their specialties were Elizabeth Bauman, theater; Colleen Fried, chemistry; Brad Goodner, biology; Earl Kissell, economics; and Roxanne Sorrick, education. At the University of Akron, they were Philip Allen, psychology; Steven Chuang, chemical and biomolecular engineering; Parizad Dejbord, modern languages; Timothy Vierheller, physics; and Janice Yoder, sociology. At Kent State, they were: Katherine Blackbird, English; Vernon Sykes, political science; Stephen Thomas, curriculum studies; and Steve Vickery, modern and classical languages. At Walsh University, they were Penelope Bove, social and behavioral sciences; Jennifer Clevinger, biology; Thomas Ling, mathematics; Cynthia Wise Staudt, English; and John G. Trapani Jr., philosophy. At the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, they were Dr. Elaine Greifenstein, Dr. Starla Glick Martinez, Dr. John Sutton and Dr. Elisabeth Young.

• These students are serving as president of a fraternity or sorority at Mount Union College: Emily Guerra, Alpha Chi Omega; Elizabeth Crawford, Alpha Delta Pi; Adam Thomas, Alpha Tau Omega; Rachael Rose and Elizabeth Johnson, Alpha Xi Delta; Melissa Turk, Delta Sigma Tau; Ryan Shannon, Phi Kappa Tau; Daniel DeWitt, Sigma Alpha Epsilon; and Benjamin Travers, Sigma Nu.

Military news
• Air Force Airman Guy E.
Nixon Jr., son of Guy Nixon and Karen Nixon, both of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2008 graduate of Springfield High School.

• Air Force Airman Marie T.
Jacobs, daughter of Theresa Jacobs and granddaughter of Joan Jacobs, both of Cuyahoga Falls, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She graduated from Perry High in Perry Township in 2008.

• Army Pvt. Derek A. Yoho, son of Shawna Bowman of Alliance, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2008 graduate of West Branch High School in Beloit.

• Marine Pvt. Daniel T. Sadie, son of Lois Williams of
Cary, N.C., and Dan Sadie of Akron, graduated from basic training at Parris Island, S.C. He is a 2001 graduate of Copley High School.

• Air Force Airman Allison M. Gedridge, daughter of Timothy Gedridge of Elyria and Andrea Adoni of Sagamore Hills, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2006 graduate of Midview High School in Grafton.

• Army Pvt. Alexis M. Upshaw, daughter of Keli Edwards of Akron, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 2003 graduate of North High School in Akron.

• Army National Guard Pvt. Kimberly A. West, daughter of Annie Gadson of Akron, graduated from combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 1995 graduate of Buchtel High School in Akron.
