Beacon Journal staff report
Thank goodness for Michigan and Rhode Island.
Ohio's population inched up 0.1 percent between July 2007 and July 2008 the third worst growth percentage in the nation, according to U.S. Census numbers released Monday.
Only Michigan (at minus 0.5 percent) and Rhode Island (at minus 0.2 percent) were worse. They were the only two states to lose population.
Maine and Vermont also saw 0.1 percent growth but were ranked higher than the Buckeye State, according to the census rankings.
Utah was the nation's fastest-growing state between July 2007 and July 2008, as its population rose 2.5 percent to 2.7 million. Arizona was second at 2.3 percent. Texas, North Carolina and Colorado rounded out the top five.
Texas gained more people 484,000 than any other during that time period. The rest of the top five were California (379,000), North Carolina (181,000), Georgia (162,000) and Arizona (147,000).
Ohio's population grew by 8,269 people.
The state's population has risen only 1.2 percent since 2000, ranking Ohio 46th during that time period among other states and the District of Columbia. Even with the slow growth, Ohio remains the seventh most populous state in the country.

I'm so blessed to move away from Ohio. It's probably the most racist place I have ever been. Let all the old racist people live together in seclusion. People in NY don't even know where Ohio even is. I wish I never heard of it.
Don't be so quick to factor "population growth" as an indicator of how well Ohio is doing.
4/5ths of Maine is just remote woods and farmland. Ditto for Vermont. Rhode Island is a beautiful state with a very high standard of living (the entire state is within minutes of the beach, and within 1-3 hours of several large cities)... ...it just lacks job growth attracting new people. But RI is also a tiny state and probably benefits by not having 10K people move there every month.
Nevada is one of the fastest growing states with most of the growth occurring in Las Vegas. But then Las Vegas growth is horribly mismanaged, the sprawl and traffic issues are insane, Las Vegas is running out of water sources, the people running the state are total idiots, and while the sun is always shining... ...Nevada suffers in some serious ways when it comes to quality of life.
* The best public schools in Nevada are as good as Ohio's mediocre public schools. Ditto for most of the sunbelt.
* The L.A. Crime problem has replicated itself in Vegas. Ditto for many parts of the sunbelt.
* Compared to all of the Sunbelt, Ohio has been spared the negative stresses of illegal immigration (higher taxes for multi-lingual public services; INS issues clogging our courts; etc)
Without a doubt Ohio is suffering right now from the effects of globalization, deindustrialization, incompetent & out-of-touch [Republican] leadership over the last 2-3 decades (most of whom considered Ohio to be OK as long as Ohio worked for the upper middle class), and as a result of the lack of growth we suffer from some serious brain drain.
BUT ON THE SAME NOTE... I consider all of this to be an incredible opportunity to rearrange and realign Ohio's future. Ohio's not the greatest place right now, but we have a lot of "legacy assets" that most Sunbelt states would love to have in their possession.
One thing Ohio absolutely needs to STOP doing is "giving things away for FREE."
Ohio's Public Universities offer Ohio's "best and brightest" HS grads full ride scholarships... ..and then often times those same grads are the first to bolt Ohio for somewhere else.
If Ohio pays to give a college student a full ride, then at the very least that "full ride scholarship" should convert to a "full ride loan" if and when the student leaves Ohio within 10 or so years of graduating. Maybe give some leeway for graduate school students who leave Ohio for graduate school but then come back to Ohio.
I'm all about helping Ohio college students... But I also know no less than 30-40 honors students from OSU who took their full rides to OSU and now live in Chicago or on the Coasts.
I would be interested in seeing a news clip on how many of Ohio's "full riders" actually stay in Ohio when they're finished with school.
Poor Mikey, not only is he confused about who is responsible for Ohio's growth dispostion, he also has attended the Don Plusquallic school for scholarships. Sad really. It's the demoncritters that are tearin' our nation apart Mikey.
Ohios lack of growth is due to the political machines lack of forsight in drawin' in or keepin' business in Ohio. It's as simple as that. For Example, Teddyboy Strickalnd jes' vetoed a bill that would have drawn the film industry to Ohio.
He'd rather have no money than some money.
The Gov. of Ohio is Ted Strickland who cares less about our state he spent the last year sniffing Hilliary not paying attention to our state.he doesn't deserve to be a governor or any type of politician. Ask the people 1000's about DHL. He is no religious preacher
I think is a shame people must leave the state of Ohio, inorder to find good paying jobs.
Dontae: Why would you say that the state of Ohio is racist!
You know just by your comments I know everything about you: your age group, lower income, you are of color, and male. Now that is a profile and that profile is used every day by others and ourselves if we are aware of it or not. Is it good or bad? Most likely not, but be it as it truly is. All people of the earth do the same... they Judge others, others that are not the same race, religion, social (groups) or class, education, gender , small, tall, fat, gay, straight, age, handicapped etc... the list goes on.
I am so tired of hearing that every white person is out to get the men and women of ethnicity because there non-white. I guess America did not speak out and break the racial barrier and elect flat out, A young Black junior Senator to run the country...OH ya I voted for him too. President Obama will do wonderful things for our racial climate in America. Lets be careful in how one judges others, playing of the race card so freely because you didn't get your way. Crying foul because of race. It isn't usually the issue. If it is take them to court and prove it. We are judged by our actions and behaviors. If you want to act a fool you are entitled. Blaming and entire state as racist.... someone isn't telling the whole truth, sounds like you got in trouble and now your out of the state, you want to blame the state of Ohio. Now isn't that more like the way it went down My young Brother? Grow up get over it racism is pas tense.
The migration from Ohio shows that our policies are far worse for families and businesses than elsewhere. People say the Framers of the Constitution did not know what they were doing, that the Constitution is “outdated.” This is exactly why our government is designed as it is. Whoever has the best policies will attract the best people and will gain power of the government.
This should be a wake call for state and local governments to reconsider taxes and so many of their intruding laws. But, as we know, they won’t. Therefore, we will keep losing political clout and continue to lose our dearest resource—people, to better ran states.
To Dontae and DeltaCom1958, Bias's,bigotry, and prejudice having little to do with racism(preferring or promoting one's own race).Ohio has fallen prey to the bleeding heart liberal agenda of promoting class warfare, high taxes, diversity(which leads to perversity),and ultra tolerence and compassion which leads to implosion.
Obama? An empty suit from the political swamp of Chicago who will play the Washington game like those before him.
NY?People are leaving due to the liberal agenda mentioned above. Some of the most arrogant, myopic individuals i've met are from that state.Where do they come to squat,Fla.!
HEY DONTAE,YOU CAN STAY IN NEW YORK,THATS PROBALLY WHERE YOUR FROM ORIGINALLY,THE PEOPLE IN OHIO I KNOW ARE NOT RACIST,
THIER FRIENDLY AND MOST WOULD BE WILLING TO HELP YOU,LIKE HOLD THE DOOR OPEN FOR YOU WHEN THIER GOING OUT AND YOUR COMING IN,OR VICE VERSA, SOUNDS LIKE OHIO IS TO GOOD FOR YOU, SO TAKE MY ADVICE,GET TO KNOW PEOPLE FIRST BEFORE TO RUN YOUR MOUTH OFF ABOUT SOMETHING YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT.
BIG BOB, PROUD OHIOIAN
