Inaugural fashion ideas, compliments of Kent State

With all of the excitement surrounding the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, we asked students at Kent State University's Fashion School to design garments for first lady-to-be Michelle Obama and Jill
Biden, wife of Vice President-elect Joe Biden, that could be worn during various inaugural activities, including the official balls. More than two dozen answered the call.

Clearly, the college sophomores, who earned extra credit for participating, had a good time with the project, as did instructor Hanna Hall, who wrote the following to her Fashion Drawing I students:

''Dear Fashion Designer:

''The fashion advisors of Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden are seeking your help. As you know, the inauguration of our new president will be in January 2009. This historic event will be broadcast around the world and, most likely, will have worldwide attention more than ever before.

''Both Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden will need to look spectacular during this occasion. We would like you to design a garment for either one of the ladies to show the world how they translate 'change' in our country's future with their appearance during the inauguration.

''We thank you in advance for your creative and fresh approach with this matter.
''Respectfully,
''The Fashion Advisors of Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden''
