Bill fights sex trade
COLUMBUS: Gov. Ted Strickland this week could sign into law a bill that would increase penalties for crimes such as kidnapping if they aid in human trafficking.
The bill attempts to combat a proliferation in the sex trade in Northwest Ohio. It would create a new ''human trafficking'' specification that prosecutors could attach to related crimes to increase penalties.
The specification would mandate jail time for convictions on promoting prostitution, illegally using a minor in pornography and endangering children.
The bill recommends that the Ohio attorney general establish a commission to study potential changes to Ohio law to combat the sex trade. Incoming Attorney General Richard Cordray says he supports such a commission.
The bill stops short of creating a new crime for sex trafficking.

Gaza backers rally
CLEVELAND: Hundreds have rallied in Cleveland, Toledo and Dayton to protest Israel's role in the fighting in Gaza.
The demonstrations on Friday came as Israel continued its airstrikes in Gaza, targeting the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Israel launched a ground offensive on Saturday night, sending tanks and infantry into the territory.
More than 300 demonstrators took part in a rally Friday at Cleveland State University, and another 150 gathered in downtown Dayton. In Toledo, several hundred people flashed posters with peace messages and shouted anti-war chants near the Lucas County Courthouse.
Amjad Doumani, one of the Toledo rally's organizers, said Palestinians in Gaza are being massacred because of Israel's actions. Airstrikes have killed more than 512 people and left 1,700 injured.
Israel said it is responding to rockets fired from Gaza by Hamas. One Israeli soldier also has been reported killed.
