The head of the Akron Health Department is retiring in the next several months after serving as director since 2003.
Dr. Michael Moser, 61, said Monday he is retiring from the city of Akron in the spring.
The Akron Health Commission will meet today to discuss its search for a new director. The mayor appoints the members of the health commission.
Moser said the commission plans to conduct a national search to find his replacement.
''The Akron Health Commission has always conducted a national search for its directors,'' he said.
The health department includes nine divisions: nursing, environmental health, health data management (including birth and death certificates), health promotion, air quality management, housing, epidemiology (disease control and surveillance) and counseling and alcoholism services.
Before joining the Akron Health Department, Moser was director of health for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Moser, who turns 62 in February, said he plans to assist the health commission and his replacement with the transition
''I feel a responsibility to do what I can to assure a smooth transition,'' he said.
Moser said he has not determined his future plans.
