Contra dance — Everyone is invited to join in a contra dance with music by Strings and Things and caller Carol Kopp. The dance will be from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Boston Township School House at state Route 303 and Riverview Road in Peninsula. Instruction will be provided at 7 p.m. Ranger Rebecca Jones will present a brief contra conversation during the break. Admission is $6. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

Lyceum lecture — Professional backpacker Andrew Skurka will speak at 7 p.m. at the Happy Days Lodge in the Cuyahoga Valley park. He has completed two long-distance hiking firsts: the 6,875-mile Great Western Loop and the 7,778-mile Sea-to-Sea Route. The Colorado-based backpacker was named the 2007 Adventurer of the Year by the National Geographic Society. His talk is called Out for a Very Long Walk. Moonlight sledding — The National Park Service is presenting a Junior Rangers sledding program for youngsters from 7 to 12 years old in the Cuyahoga Valley park. It will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Call 800-642-3297, Ext. 100, for reservations, the location and additional information.
Friday night lights — The Medina County Park District is staging a night hike to admire the winter moon and stars at 8 p.m. at River Styx Park. That's off River Styx Road in Guilford Township. For all ages. Free. Call 330-722-9364 for more information.
Saturday
Full-moon hike — The National Park Service is sponsoring a full-moon hike on the Valley and Towpath trails in the Cuyahoga Valley. It will run from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Meet at the Everett Road Covered Bridge. It will be an easy 33/4-mile hike.
Bird walk — Volunteer Dwight Chasar will lead a winter bird walk at 8:30 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley park. Meet at the Oak Hill Trailhead off Oak Hill Road in Boston Township.
Ski preparation— The National Park Service is staging a workshop on cross-country ski preparation for waxable and nonwaxable skis. It will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Kendall Lake Shelter off Truxell Road in Boston Township. The fee is $10. Call 216-524-1497 for reservations and additional information.
Hike, breakfast — Metro Parks, Serving Summit County is holding a winter hike, followed by a campfire breakfast. Meet at 8 a.m. at Goodyear Heights Metro Park off Newton Street in East Akron. Hibernation for kids — Naturalist Danusia Casteel of Metro Parks, Serving Summit County will direct a nature program on hibernation for youngsters 6 to 12 years old. Canal life — Historical interpreter Hank Mallery of Cleveland Metroparks will direct a program on ''Food, Songs and Stories of the Old Ohio & Erie Canal.'' It will be staged at 1 p.m,. at the Western Reserve Historical Society, 10825 East Blvd., Cleveland. Feeder birds — The Wilderness Center off U.S. 250 near Wilmot will present a program on backyard feeder birds at 9:30 a.m. There will also be a bird-banding demonstration from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Call 330-359-5235 for more information.

Food, Land & People — Mount Union College's John T. Huston-Dr. John B. Brumbaugh Nature Center will host a workshop for educators on the relationship between agriculture, the environment and people from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The center is on Daniel Street off state Route 183 six miles south of Alliance in Washington Township. Sunday
Winter hike — The National Park Service is sponsoring a 51/2-mile winter hike at 9 a.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley park. It will be on the moderately tough Buckeye and Deer Run trails. Meet at the Ira Trailhead off Riverview Road north of Ira Road in Cuyahoga Falls.
Snowshoe hike — You can join a snowshoe hike from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley park, weather permitting. Meet at the Kendall Lake Shelter off Truxell Road in Boston Township. The $5 fee includes snowshoe rental. It will be a 21/2-mile walk on the Pine Grove Trail. To register, call 216-524-1497.
Full-moon hike — The Portage Park District will hold a full-moon hike to listen for owls and coyotes at 4:30 p.m. at Towner's Woods Park. It is off Ravenna Road north of Brady Lake in Franklin Township. Dress for the weather. Call 330-297-7728 for reservations and additional information.

Park concert — The Mountain Rose presents Paul Kovac, Jim Metz, Heather Malyuk and Susie Goehring in a concert of old-fashioned music at 7:15 p.m. The show will be staged at the Roy Smith Shelter at Kent's Fred Fuller Park, 497 Middlebury Road. Winter camping — Metro Parks, Serving Summit County is sponsoring a three-part workshop on winter camping. The first class will be at 7 p.m. in the Shady Hollow Pavilion off Sand Run Parkway in Sand Run Metro Park in northwest Akron. Participants who attend all three classes will be eligible for a winter camp out. The other classes will be Jan. 20 and Jan. 27. Food and equipment will not be provided for the camp out. Adopt a trail — The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is seeking volunteers to help clean up and maintain trails. Volunteers are needed from 1 to 5 p.m. on the Tree Farm Trail. Meet at the Horseshoe Pond parking lot off Major Road on the border between Peninsula and Boston Township. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and dress for the weather.
