Initiative to present ideas for promoting racial, Christian unity
By Colette M. Jenkins

Imagine Unity co-chairmen the Rev. Knute Larson and Bishop F. Josephus Johnson will share their vision for promoting Christian and racial harmony during a Team Town Hall Meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the House of the Lord, 1650 Diagonal Road, Akron.
The event will mark the first anniversary of the Imagine Unity initiative, an alliance of pastors and church associations that is calling on local Christians to model racial and faith unity. The alliance started in January 2007 with six organizations sponsoring an evening of unity with John Perkins, co-founder of the Mississippi-based John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development.
Perkins' goal is to show Christian communities practical ways to promote unity and care for one another. Since then, a group of local pastors have dedicated themselves to advancing solidarity and harmony in the local Christian community. They made a commitment by writing a unity pledge.
Group members have been developing personal relationships with each other across racial and denominational lines. They sponsored a father-son and men-boys night during an Akron Aeros game at Canal Park, which included time at the end to talk about reconciliation and oneness.
Monday's event will include music by combined choirs and testimonies of what some people are doing in the local Christian community to break down barriers that hinder unity.
