Portage district wants to use old rail route

A two-mile rail trail at Berlin Lake is under consideration in southeastern Portage County.
The Berlin Lake Association has requested a partnership with the Portage Park District to build a multipurpose trail on an abandoned rail corridor in Deerfield Township.
The park district is requesting a trail lease from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the property, as well as from the Ohio Division of Wildlife, which holds a lease for wildlife management, including public hunting and fishing.
The association — a nonprofit community group — and the park district will hold a public meeting on the proposed Berlin Lake Trail at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Deerfield Town Hall. 1450 State Route 14, Deerfield Township.
The public is invited to the meeting to learn more about the project, offer comments and find out how to help.
Christine Craycroft, executive director of the park district, will speak about the proposal and explain trail development and management plans. Representatives of the Corps of Engineers and the Division of Wildlife will be on hand to answer questions.
Donors and volunteers are needed for development and maintenance of the bike-and-hike trail.
The trail would be built atop the old Lake Erie, Alliance and Wheeling Railroad (later the New York Central Railroad). The trail as proposed would include a 475-foot concrete bridge over the reservoir.
Its northern terminus would be at state Route 224, east of the Deerfield Circle and west of the Portage-Mahoning county line. Its southern terminus would be at state Route 14 at the old North Benton Station just north of the Portage-Mahoning line.
Parking areas are proposed at the northern and southern ends, along with signs and an information kiosk.
The Portage Park District has worked with partners to build the Headwaters Trail between Mantua and Garrettsville in northern Portage County and the Portage Hike and Bike Trail between Kent and Ravenna.
