AKRON
Billboards delayed
AKRON: City Council has again extended its moratorium on legislation focusing on city billboards.
A two-week delay was approved by council Monday to allow members more time to research the potential legislation and consider a study on billboards by the U.S. government.
Council is expected to settle the issue at its Feb. 9 meeting.
A neighborhood group contends billboards blight the city and that Akron's billboard laws are not strict enough. Clear Channel Communications, which owns most of Akron's billboards, opposes any changes.
Stow man still missing
AKRON: Akron police still have no information about a 58-year-old Stow man who has been missing since Jan. 3.
Timothy Heil, who was last seen at a Wedgewood Drive shopping plaza in Akron, was driving his 1996 green Chevy Suburban with Ohio license plate DCM-5915.
Heil weighs about 260 pounds and is 6 feet 4 inches tall. He has short brown hair, a fair complexion and wears glasses.
Anybody with information on Heil's whereabouts is asked to contact police at 330-375-2490.
20 vie for Ward 8
AKRON: Twenty people have applied to replace former Ward 8 Councilman Bob Keith.
The applicants will be interviewed individually Saturday by a selection committee comprised of five current council members. The committee is headed by Councilman-at-large James Shealey.
Council President Marco Sommerville said the committee's recommendation will be announced Monday and council will be asked to vote on the candidate that night.
Keith resigned his seat to accept the job of council clerk.
Delivery man robbed
AKRON: A pizza delivery driver was robbed Saturday night while attempting to make a delivery in the 600 block of East Waterloo Road.
The driver for Hungry Howie's Pizza, 366 E. Waterloo Road, told police he was on a porch when two men approached and told him to go to the back door, Akron police said.
While in the driveway, one of the men pointed a pistol at the driver, who slapped it out of the robber's hand. The driver ran down the street, flagged down a passing motorist and asked for a ride out of the area. The driver then called authorities.
Police are looking for two black men in their 20s who are about 5 feet 10 inches tall. One man was wearing a blue coat, and the other man was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Akron Police Department at 330-375-2490.
Pizza shop robbed
AKRON: An East Akron pizza restaurant was robbed early Friday night, and a customer who challenged the robber ended up losing his wallet, too.
Employees at Nick's Pizza, 765 E. Archwood Ave., told police that a man armed with a pistol and wearing a ski mask entered the restaurant at about 7:30 Friday night.
When the robber pointed the gun at a customer and demanded his wallet, the customer grabbed the gun and struggled with him. The robber got control of the gun and hit the customer in the head, knocking him to the ground. The robber took the victim's wallet.
The gunman pointed the gun at employees and told them to get into the back room. The robber slammed the register on the floor and took money from it.
The man is described as a white male between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 150 to 160 pounds. He wore a green shirt with a red shirt underneath, blue jeans, a dark-colored ski mask and gloves.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Akron police at 330-375-2490.
Walmart thief pleads
AKRON: An Akron man pleaded guilty Monday to robbery, assault on a police officer and other offenses for an October theft at the Walmart in Fairlawn, authorities said.
Alvin J. Blackmon, 57, of Peerless Avenue, will be sentenced March 4 by Summit County Common Pleas Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer. Robbery, a felony, carries a prison sentence of two to eight years.
Prosecutors said Blackmon stole a digital photo device Oct. 14, fled from the store after being confronted by Walmart personnel and jumped into the bed of a truck driven by a woman.
Police arrived and tried to stop the truck, but Blackmon jumped out of the truck bed, pushed the woman out of the way and began driving himself. After a cruiser avoided being hit by the truck, officers stopped Blackmon and arrested him as he was turning onto Cleveland-Massillon Road, prosecutors said.
Blackmon also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of theft and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

AKRON: Ward 7 Councilwoman Tina Merlitti will meet with residents during her monthly ward meeting, at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Firestone Park Community Center, 1480 Girard St.

Trustees also agreed to spend $13,050 for an audit of township books. By state law, Bath is required to perform an audit every other year; however, the township pays for one annually.
LAKE TWP.
Police chief hired
LAKE TWP.: Township trustees on Monday appointed Capt. Jack Coontz to be the new chief of the Uniontown Police Department.
Coontz had been serving in an interim role since former chief Donald Hensley retired at the end of 2008.
In other business, trustees approved the purchase of three bulletproof vests for the police department at a cost not to exceed $1,590. They also accepted the resignation of police Officer Russell Diehl and reappointed Bob Capelli to the township zoning commission for a five-year term through Jan. 29, 2014.
NORTH CANTON
Budget cuts
NORTH CANTON: City Council's finance committee expects to submit a 2009 budget by mid-February.
The committee has been slicing the budget proposed by Mayor David Held in December. In the meantime, the city is operating on an interim budget.
Officials learned this month that the city will receive less money than anticipated from the state's local government fund. Instead of the estimated $680,000, the city will receive about $602,000.
The committee will meet at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday at city hall to discuss ways to close the $78,000 gap. The meeting is open to the public.

The campaign raised $401,486 at kettle sites throughout Summit County. The goal was $400,000.
Salvation Army officials decided to extend the campaign through Dec. 31 because donations were down from the prior year. The campaign was initially set to end Dec. 24.
