The newest member of Akron council has never before run for office, but he does have 40 years of experience behind the scenes in politics.
Council members tapped Raymond Cox III on Monday night for Bob Keith's Ward 8 seat out of a field of 19 candidates. The other applicants included several attorneys and a former Ward 1 councilman.
Keith recently resigned to become council clerk.
Council President Marco Sommerville said Cox, a University of Akron professor, was set apart by his experience with local government budgets and grants, which council members thought could prove vital in challenging economic times.
Cox, 59, previously served as chief of staff for the New Mexico lieutenant governor and on the board that distributed community development block grants throughout that state. He also has been a consultant to municipal, county, state and federal agencies and to the government of Latvia.
Cox moved to West Akron in 2000 to become a professor in UA's Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies. He said Monday he felt he was ''destined'' to some day run for office.
''It's the right moment in my life and happened to be at a time when a position came up,'' said Cox, who has worked on local, statewide and congressional campaigns and will continue his job at the university.
Cox will have to jump right into campaigning, with the filing deadline around the corner and several other Democratic Ward 8 hopefuls expected to challenge him. He said he's confident in his ability to win a contested primary and general election.
''I wasn't doing this to be a place holder,'' said Cox, who is married and has a son who is finishing his degree at UA. ''I can get other people elected. I don't know why I can't be self-elected.''

Isn't it conflict of interest for a local college teacher to hold a local poltical position, where the University receives money from the community???
I think longterm local residents should have gotten the job over this guy.
For everything a reason.
I'd love to hear the real one.
Cronies? Drinking buddies? I don't buy this joker from New Mexico. The higher you go in public office, be it local to state to federal, the more corrupt politicians become. I guess DP thought he could learn a thing or two from this guy. I could do the GIS and see if this guy really has lived on the West side since 2000, and I probably will, but what's he going to do that Keith couldn't.......bring back Acme's???
