He even knew others that she had been involved with. Tell me why any teacher would have the need to text my son’s cell phone? I failed by not being more observant to who was calling and texting him.

Do people suppose that a magical change happens when a boy "turns into" a man at the age of 18? Kids start having sex around 15 - 16. If they were previous students but were "of age," this wouldn't be an issue. This sounds to me like a case of a spurned 17 year-old trying to get even with his rejector. He probably got mad that she was having sex with one of his buddies and blew the whistle on her to ruin her life.

Clearly, she has problems would make a student the object of her sexual affection. A husband that didn't show her enough affection maybe? We are not talking about a 40 year old male cop with a 23 year old girlfriend. We are talking about 16 & 17 year old boys with a 34 year old teacher, which I as a parent entrusted to be in a safe learning environment. It does not matter if this was a 34 year old guy teacher with a 17 year old girl. The principles are the same.

It doesn't matter if her husband did not pay enough attention to her; there are plenty of older guys (ADULTS) willing to get a piece for free. I am sure you would be the first in line.

For your information – This was not at all a scorned lover. This was very much an active thing and just so happened, he left his phone where his parents could see it and there was no denying the relationship. His parent did the right thing by calling the police.

He is hurting because he IS in love with her and did not mean for this to happen. She had him convinced they were going to be together. She told him she loved him. That is how these kids get hurt. They believe the authority figures that are hurting them.

Would you be saying the same thing if this was a 34 year old male teacher having sex with a17 year old girl? Oh you probably would. The bottom line here is that this was an illegal act and everyone in this situation is hurt. This woman has a husband and two young sons. I hope she can get the help she needs because this is NOT normal behavior. I actually graduated from Rittman several years ago and have had the teacher in class, and it is by far the most surprising news I've heard. I am extremely disappointed that this teacher, above other teachers whom I wouldnt be so surprised over, would stoop to this level for whatever her excuses. Besides, she's not just breaking several ethics barriers and laws between teacher-student relations, she's also married with two children of her own and thus has committed adultry. I feel incredibly sad for her husband and children, and it's a shame that Rittman is getting an even worse name for itself although it's actually not as bad a (small) city as I'm sure most alumni deem it to be.

My son was in her class and she is a very good teacher ,I have met her many times because of teacher confrences,and she did not do this! Over time I heard the kids saying they were going to set her up because she was to involved ,and they hoped that she would quit or go away, she is being framed ,these kids out here a very evil and the school system is just as bad . My son just last year said the other ninth graders would get her sooner or later,and if she did do this shame on her ,but its a no go for me ,she is a class act and a lot of these kids out here in hillbilly heaven will do anything to get away from learning ,my son has been doing great since this teacher and me and my wive decided to keep in contact, we gaveher our cell phone numbers and e-mail so she could contact us anytime,she is being set up by a gang of low life students ,I know for a fact... Another thing she Quit but htat did make her look guilty,they put her under extreme pressure...

i think this is all a bunch of bs this goes on in every school from here to alaska. i went to barberton and my ex was from seville. this happened in barberton with two girls we were all grown we knew what we were doing. i was 19 and she was 17 she married the teacher the day of graduation. the other teacher that i was with we kept in touch for a while and then that was that. as for my ex in seville him and the choir teacher stayed in contact and later they split. my point is this we all knew what we were doing. these"kids" are not kids. and the teachers that we chose to go out with are NOT perverts. i give the ages of these teachers at time and not one of them was over 25. so get over it and stop being hurt because she didnt only chose you but also a buddie. this is from a FEMALE that has been there.

I think this happens more then everyone realizes.. I can name people i went to school with that we maybe had an idea there was something going on, but nobody realized the extent until we snuck into a bar downtown and at the table next to us sat the teacher (male) with our classmate (female) on his lap in full make out. had there been camera phones then he would have been fired. as for the above people who knew about it and didnt tell- we tried this when i was in school, and 2 of my friends actually got detention for lying because we didnt have proof. first of all it's not their problem, and second.. whats to say anyone believe them?

As a previous student of Rittman High School and this teacher I find this very hard to believe. If in fact this is the truth she has changed drastically. I agree with some of the other posts on here that maybe this was an angry student that got rejected so he is out to get her. Her resignation doesn't deem her guilty by any means. I personally had a situation while I attended this school with a male teacher, no sexual contact by any means, just the perverted remarks and pictures. He was made to resign or he would have been fired. They resign to protect themselves from having a bad record in the event that they are found not guilty. Regardless if shes found not guilty or not she will still have a bad name because of the accusations. I would have never guessed her to do something like this EVER! She was a great teacher. She put forth as much effort as she possible could on her end to see to it that we all succeeded and graduated.

I was an idiot because I made an anonymous call to the super's office. I still had two kids in that high school plus one on the way next year.

Nothing stays secret here and my kids would have been harassed by everyone, and some of the staff would likely have treated them with disdain.

Again, I feel crappy because I didn't go straight to RPD, but I felt I had gone through proper channels.

Too Informed: I have to agree with your statement that nothing stays secret in the small town of Rittman. Theres no doubt in my mind that your children would have been harassed. As I stated in my last post I was involved in a situation with a male teacher at this school, I reported it along with two other students we thought since it was in the last few days of the school year things would be fine and we wouldn't be bothered, but the next day at school boy were we hated by many. In fact we were hated by most seeings how he was not only a teacher he was the football coach!

On the other hand: I think we all as parents need to educate our children on sex ed! I know many parents that never even discuss the issue with there kids because they "learn" it in school. The school system just skims the top of the topic, you don't learn everything that you should, and in my opinion your kids would take more to heart hearing it from there parents, people that the look up to rather than some teacher that is probably boring them and putting them to sleep in class.

I have several family members that have graduated from Rittman since she started working there. Apparently, she has been doing this sort of thing for almost a decade. If this is true, there is definitely some mental illness there.

I graduated from Rittman High School. I remember attending Proms and it seemed like there were always a handful of girls with dates old enough to be teachers. Nobody from the school ever said anything and there were never any age restrictions in place. I think it says something about the culture in the school system. People are aware of a lot of misconducts but don't report them for whatever reason.

I hope she does jail time too to send a message. I don't have children but if I did, I would want my son involved in a teacher sex scandal.

Lobsterclaw, you are overlooking the fact that teachers have a responsibility to students, parents, and community. I don't care who or what she does as long as it's not my 14-17 year old kid! When they are 18 they are legally allowed to do what they want. The parents also should probably shoulder some blame.

The "age of consent" doesn't apply to a charge of sexual battery between a teacher and student enrolled in his/her school - the student could be 19 and it is still illegal.

What gives here? How come we hear about these fairly hot to smokin hot teachers playin around with young boys? Do they really think they are going to really benifit from this? These teachers are educated or so we thought and get caught with their hands in the you know what. What are they thinking.? You have to be a complete and utter dolt to not think a male student wouldnt be high fivin and telling his peeps after tappin a school teacher. It would be the talk of the school right quick.

i had mrs. speicher as an englich teacher several years ago, she was an awesome teacher, so this does suprise me. there were always guys in my class swooning over her but she acted very proffesional around us. have any of you guys ever thought that maybe something is psychologically wrong with her for her to be interested in young men. also the boys are not the only victims. Her small children and husband will have to live with this for the rest of their lives as well.If all that has been said is true, then she should do jail time, but if it is not her life is ruined regardless.

As a teacher, you have a moral responsibility to act PROFESSIONALLY with your students. I teach students as old as 22 and I'm only 26. I don't party with them, exchange personal phone calls or emails, or sleep with them. It doesn't matter if the boys "wanted it" or not. Their opinion is void, she raped them no matter if they liked it or not.

Also, anytime you are in a position of authority over a minor, any contact is unlawful. Even though one of the students was thought to be 18, she is still in a position of authority, so that would at minimum be considered sexual harassment, which is a hot topic and punishment can be severe.

For argument sake, many Universities prohibit consenual relations between professor and student and these people are all over 18. The student can be expelled and the teacher fired. FYI

The student that came to me to talk didn't have further contact and in that case, no actual crime had taken place hence no need to call the police.

Erin Speicher was an excellent teacher and as far as I knew a good person with a lovely family. When something like this happens it is no doubt, hard to understand/believe. Things like this happen everywhere, and it may be someone you would never suspect. When this happens in a small town like Rittman, it's even harder to stomach.

I think that the bashing of eachother needs to stop here, guys. We are all entitled to our own opinions and should post them if we wish. However, complaining about eachothers comments is really a bit silly. No one but the parties involved know for sure what happened and we need to respect that. If you don't know the whole story, please do not make accusations, or rude comments about any of it.

Regardless of what happened, she has to live with the consequences of her actions. I can only imagine what her family is going through, and the guilt that she must be feeling for putting them through such an ordeal. I'm certain that the courts will deal with this appropriately and that the school will do the same. In the meantime, my thoughts will be with the parties involved and their respective families.

The fact remains that if she did do what she is accused of doing, she is in the wrong even if the boys were consenting. Attacking each other after the fact does no one any good. The fact is this happens in every school, every generation. The best we can do is try to prevent it by talking to our children and keeping a relationship open with them. We can't be everywhere they are. We need to make them aware that these things can happen and how to react if it does, send them out the door, then pray they are safe. I have a child in that school. Although she is handling it well, it is the first time the bad side of adults has hit her so closely and it has left her alittle broken hearted. RHSknows: Its not just people on this site, there are postings on the other newspapers sites that say the parents knew for some time and didnt report it until the kid found out she was having a relationship with someone else and got his heart broke. I personally find this hard to believe considering the type of teacher she was when I was in high school when she first started there. And like I said in my first post if this is true I will be shocked.

I don't think that we should call these boys "victims" persay. They knew what they were doing and were willing right? They knew what they were going to her house for, so in my opinion if these accusations are true she could be charged with corrupting them but I wouldn't necessarily say that she molested them. Being molested is something that is unwanted sexual contact.

I know many students in that school, and I have family members that attend that school. You must understand that there are always going to be rumors and many many different stories in a situation like this. She is innocent until proven guilty, and that is the theory that I seem to follow until it is proven otherwise. If this in fact did happen I cant say that I will feel sorry for the "victims" because they knew what they were doing. The true victims are her husband and two young sons I do and will always feel for them to have to go through such a horrible thing!

When I was 16, back in 1986, one of my female teachers seduced me so I know what this is like. It was my first sexual experience too. She convinced me to go with her to her apartment, and I had to create so many lies to my friends and parents to cover for the time, that by the time I got into her car I was already EXTREMELY nervous about what I was doing. (But my 16 year old hormones were also driving me crazy with excitement.) I was nervous getting out of her car and going into her apartment that someone might see me. Once we went to her bedroom I was still so nervous that I had a lot of trouble "arousing", but I finaly did. Then the actual act lasted maybe 2 minutes. After I finished I felt so embarrassed and so awkward that all I wanted to do was get my clothes back on and go home. I was feeling sick to my stomach. She drove me back to the mall (our secret meeting spot), I got myself home, and after that I had a terrible time even looking at her in school anymore.
I'm writing this to let everyone know - from personal experience - that for the boy it isn't always as exciting after you've done it as you might think. That's just part of why this is so wrong. I feel for these boys, because I know how awful and disgusted I felt for such a long time, because of what I did and how many lies I had to tell to do it. And I still keep this all inside. To this day I wish I never did it. It can leave terrible emotional scars. I now have two happy, friendly boys of my own, ages 12 and 14, and believe me I will watch over them very carefully in the years to come.

When I was at RHS, it was rumored that a certain teacher had a relationship with her student and eventually ended up marrying him. The irony is that he actually ended up becoming a Superintendent of Rittman Schools. If you want proof, break out your yearbooks and see. It just goes to show this sort of relationship is perfectly acceptable.

She should have to do 2 years for each kid she was with, no exceptions!

I have a question for the former students (and some parents) of this woman who have made posts defending what a great teacher she was. Doesn't she teach Language Arts? If she was so effective in the classroom, why don't your posts reflect your exceptional writing skills? Sentences start with a capital letter and end with punctuation. Separate thoughts are not run together with endless commas in between. And yes, there is a big difference when using "there, their, or they're", and "your or you're." Let's not even start on the spelling....

The young man I knew she "tested the waters" with has been called in by police. He's now a legal adult (but still a student) and put it behind him. He could be called in to testify.
