Green schools pick new chief

Board offers job to head of Mechanicsburg district after final interviews

By George W. Davis
Special to the Beacon Journal

GREEN: The new superintendent of Green schools is Michael E. Nutter, superintendent at Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools west of Columbus in Champaign County.

The 40-year-old father of four was chosen Friday night, following interviews with the district's Board of Education, administrators, staff, students and community representatives.

The board selected Nutter and extended the job offer to him. His hiring will be voted on Thursday at a 6:30 p.m. meeting at Green High School.

His contract is to be finalized by the board's April 9 meeting, although he will be working in Green a day or two each week while taking vacation days from his current position, said Green school board President Bob Campbell.

Nutter and Rod Moorman, superintendent of St. Henry Schools, were the two finalists and were both interviewed twice before the decision was made.

Nutter will succeed Dr. Wade E. Lucas, who leaves Green schools on March 23 after 23 months as Green superintendent to head Olentangy Local Schools northwest of Columbus. Olentangy has 14,000 students compared with 4,250 at Green.

Nutter has 1,124 students in Mechanicsburg schools.

''He seems to be the right fit
for Green,'' Campbell said of Nutter in announcing the decision.

''We weren't just looking to see which was the better candidate, but rather which one was a better fit for our schools and the community,'' Campbell stressed.

Reached Saturday at his Dublin home, Nutter said: ''This was a point in my career that seemed to be a good time to look. I had contact with Green, which in my opinion, is a great school district and a great place to raise our kids.''

He also explained that although he lives in Dublin and works in Mechanicsburg, he ''wanted my kids to be in the same school system and community where I work and this seems like a perfect fit for all of that.''

Born in Ravenna and raised in Windham, he received his bachelor's degree in education from Ohio State University and his master's in education administration at Ashland University.

He is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at Northcentral University, an Arizona-based online school.

He taught science and math in the Dublin City Schools beginning in 1993, was assistant principal of Dublin Middle School and elementary principal at Madison Plain Schools and then at Mechanicsburg. He was elevated to assistant superintendent in 2004 and superintendent a year later.

Nutter's wife, Rebecca, teaches language development at the Oral Auditory Center in Dublin.

The Nutters have daughters Alexa, Rowan and Ainsley and son Ryan.

How much learning is required in PHD that would require actual class time??? PHD's are more about research then actually learing in a classroom. I wouldn't hold that against him!

I'm from Mechanicsburg, and I know that Green Local will be getting a top notch Super, He has done a great job for us and works well with all employees, and with the community. I for one will miss him, I just hope his replacement will do as good a job as he has.
