Wooster artist taps top prize in Pabst contest

Her mug is full with 24 cases of suds, cash. Painting to appear on billboards

By Rick Armon
Beacon Journal staff writer

Amanda Wallace will be swimming in beer this year.

Not literally — but she could if she wanted to.

Wallace, a 26-year-old artist from Wooster, won the grand prize for painting in Pabst Brewing Co.'s national Cans on Canvas art contest this year.

She will receive $1,893 and a year's supply of Pabst Blue Ribbon — that's two cases a month. (The amount of money is symbolic for the year Pabst won a beer competition at the Chicago World's Fair.)

Her abstract and colorful painting, called Put It on My Tab, will be featured on billboards and store promotional materials. It features the signature red, white and blue Pabst cans in various stages of being crushed.

''I feel really honored to be picked,'' Wallace said. ''I'm still having a hard time believing it.''

And with all that beer coming, it helps that she likes Pabst.

''It's probably the best-tasting beer around and it's not horribly priced,'' she said.

Pabst, an old beer brand that has seen a resurgence in sales over the last decade, has run the contest for three years. There also were grand prize winners and runners-up in photography, sculpture and poetry categories.

''We're just wowed every year with what we get,'' said Bryan Clark, senior brand manager for Pabst. ''You don't paint something if it doesn't inspire you. They come up with way better and creative things than we would on our own.''
