ODOT sets $37 million in projects for Wayne, Medina roads, bridges
Published on Thursday, Apr 09, 2009
Beacon Journal staff report
The Ohio Department of Transportation plans to begin work on $37 million worth of new road, bridge and culvert projects this year in District 3, which includes Medina and Wayne counties.
The state agency also will continue work on $95.9 million worth of other projects that began in previous years.
ODOT officials announced the spending and projects Wednesday as they kicked off the 2009 construction season during a news conference at district headquarters in Ashland.
ODOT spokesman Brian Stacy said the state is getting closer to completing its $76 million overhaul of the Interstate 71/Interstate 76 interchange. The project, which began in 2006, has involved widening the highways and adding a new ramp from I-76 westbound to I-71 southbound.
That ramp is expected to open around Memorial Day.
''The majority of the heavy lifting will be done this year,'' Stacy said.
The work next year will involve new asphalt and road markings.
Other projects in Medina County include:
• Resurfacing state Route 83 from I-71 to state Route 18.
• Road maintenance along Interstate 271, state Route 3 and state Route 162.
• A culvert replacement along state Route 606 in Hinckley Township.
• Replacing signs along various sections of U.S. Routes 42 and 224.
New projects in Wayne County include resurfacing Route 3 between Wooster and Creston, and a portion of state Route 57 in Orrville.
ODOT also might begin other projects using federal stimulus money. Those include replacing bridges on state Route 301 in Spencer Township and state Route 421 in Lodi in Medina County, and replacing the state Route 301 and 539 spans over I-71 in Wayne County.
For more details about the District 3 projects, go to http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/d03/ and click on ''District 3 Construction Program.''
Statewide, ODOT is investing more than $1.9 billion this year in more than 650 road, bridge and multimodal projects. The state agency plans to announce projects in Cuyahoga, Portage, Stark and Summit counties at a news conference today.
