University of Akron hires longtime GOP consultant

By Carol Biliczky
Beacon Journal staff writer

University of Akron trustees have hired a longtime Republican consultant to fill a newly created position: associate vice president of strategy and finance.

Scott Borgemenke, 43, was named to the new post March 25 at a salary of $142,000. He started his new job March 30.

Borgemenke reports to John Case, vice president for finance and administration, who extended a written offer of employment March 24 on the condition trustees OK'd the hire the next day.

Borgemenke's broad job description calls for him to develop ''innovative solutions to challenging problems'' in budgeting and financing.

He also is to help John LaGuardia, vice president of public affairs and development, to establish relationships within local, state and federal governments and with the governor and other senior officials.

That apparently would supplement lobbying UA already has under way with Sean P. Dunn and Associates in Columbus for $162,000 a year, 16 percent more than UA spent the previous year, and with Birch, Hortin, Bittner and Cherot in Washington, D.C., for $36,000 a year, according to records provided by the university.

Case said his new hire's expertise — as chief of staff for Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted, a top policy adviser for former Ohio Gov. Bob Taft and as a consultant — will be an asset to the university.

''We want him to help us in terms of the state budget and making sure that the university gets the most of it,'' Case said.

He said Borgemenke is commuting from his home in Dublin, a Columbus suburb.

Borgemenke also is well-known in Ohio as the head of the state Racing Commission from 2002 to 2004. He was executive vice president of Canada's Magna Entertainment Corp., the largest owner and operator of race tracks in North America, including Thistledown in Northfield, for about six months last year.

He returned to Columbus last fall to become chief strategist for the Ohio Republican Party.

''When they asked me to return, they had me at hello,'' Borgemenke said in a news release. ''Campaigns complete me.''

He was a trustee for his alma mater, Ohio University, from 2006 until 2008, when he resigned, citing work commitments.

And the solution will be: Raise tuition, add more fees but burry it so deep nobody will know what it is and as for working with state and local agencies (i.e. lets go to lunch and talk), well we all know where that will go, on the Mayor's city credit card! HA!

Reading his resume printed here it seems he's either a job hopper or gets let go regularly.

I can't believe he's commuting from Columbus every day to Akron. I'm sure he's being reimbursed for housing and food expenses as well while he temporarily lives her in Akron. I would bet his gross income is closer to $160,000.

This is a very disappointing hire for the university.

Impressive resume? Cannot seem to hold a job? Magna Corp. on verge of bankruptcy. Six months experience at failed corp.? Husted policy advisor to Gov.Taft. This longtime GOP consultant has really fallen on bad times. The University of Akron needs his expertise!

@Murfed - Amazing isn't it? I've been though countless consultans who were paid too much and produced too little. The majority of the time, the consultants conclusion is the same story that employees have been telling management all along. Funny how the top dawns never want to listen to their employees but rather spend thousands of dollars on a consultant to hear the same thing.

The sky is falling!!!

You people never change. It would be surprising to learn that none of you have ever attempted suicide considering your bitter, paranoid and miserable regard for yourselves and the world in which you live. Does the term personality disorder mean anything to the lot of you?

another bureaucrat . . . . isn't it amazing how these guys fake their way thru life. . . . . . and the board of directors falls for this baloney. . . . .is this another scam to wring more money from the stupid taxpayers?

It goes with the style of Proenza. I, for one, am fed up with this kind of operation.

I am a republican but after last November's election results I would be hesitant to hire a republican strategist. Was the former head coach of the Detroit Lions not available?

“Borgemenke's broad job description calls for him to develop ''innovative solutions to challenging problems'' in budgeting and financing.”
How about all administrative positions get a 50% pay cut to help in University admissions?
“Case said his new hire's expertise — as chief of staff for Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted, a top policy adviser for former Ohio Gov. Bob Taft and as a consultant — will be an asset to the university.”
Does everyone remember what the former Governor did to this state? Does everyone remember how much in campaign cash good old Jon Husted took off with for his Secretary of State run? It could have helped people in his party win and retain control of the Ohio House instead of losing control of it.
''We want him to help us in terms of the state budget and making sure that the university gets the most of it,'' Case said.
Does everyone know that this guy helped Jon Husted raise Ohio Budgetary spending thru the roof?
“He said Borgemenke is commuting from his home in Dublin, a Columbus suburb.”
Every day? 5 days a week? Once a week? I want to see the receipts, gas, mileage, Etc or is he using a university provided vehicle? If it is each day he is on the road I guarantee 3 ½ to 4 hours round trip. So I guess we are paying for that to? Because I know he is not.
“Borgemenke also is well-known in Ohio as the head of the state Racing Commission from 2002 to 2004. He was executive vice president of Canada's Magna Entertainment Corp., the largest owner and operator of race tracks in North America, including Thistledown in Northfield, for about six months last year.”
So gambling is coming like it or not.
“He returned to Columbus last fall to become chief strategist for the Ohio Republican Party.”
And the Republican Party lost the Ohio House.
He was a trustee for his alma mater, Ohio University, from 2006 until 2008, when he resigned, citing work commitments.
He did them a Hugh favor.

This hire only shows how out of touch this University has become with the average student. Great...when in doubt...hire a Republican. Worked really well the last eight years...huh??? This over paid crony capitalist is exactly what this University DOES NOT NEED. ENOUGH!!!!

Wonder if he will get time with the "coach" - since there executive level people need "coaching" to be effective in their jobs? And is he full time every day for the salary - so when he is not at the University he can be found in the halls of our state capital as watchdog for spending? And who will know where he is, etc. Seems like a lot of money being spent at the University and they still don't have the operating funds for the stadium.....where's the money tree planted - in the leaking Biology Department greenhouse????
