Akron will host its 23rd annual Holocaust Commemoration at noon Tuesday at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High St.
The student awards ceremony for the annual Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest begins at 11:30 a.m. The Garfield High School String Quartet will provide a musical interlude between the ceremony and the commemoration program.
Erica Gold, a Holocaust survivor from Beachwood, will share her story of how she, her family and other Jews were treated in Hungary during the Holocaust. Gold was born Erica Taubner in Budapest in 1932. She nearly lost her life twice before turning 12 years old.
The 2009 commemoration theme is Kristallnacht (The Night of the Broken Glass), Nov. 9-10, 1938: The Eruption of State Sponsored Violence Against Jews in Germany and Austria. What Are the origins and Consequences of Mass Violence? The theme was chosen to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht.
An exhibit featuring award-winning art from the contest will be at the Library through May 1.
