RELIGION NOTES
Church celebrates 175th

First Baptist planning service and special program Sunday in Akron

By Colette M. Jenkins
Beacon Journal religion writer

First Baptist Church of Akron will celebrate its 175th anniversary with a worship service at 10:30 a.m. and a special program at 1 p.m. Sunday at the church, 1670 Shatto Ave., Akron.

The Rev. Jeffrey A. Johnston, national director of evangelism and national coordinator for NET (National Evangelism Team) of American Baptist Churches USA, will be the keynote speaker for the morning service. The afternoon program will include music by Mill Street Brass and a message from the Rev. Lawrence O. Swain, executive minister for the Ohio Baptist Convention.

The church was established in 1834 by nine people who met in a village schoolhouse. In 1836, the congregation began constructing a church at East Center Street and Buchtel Avenue on a lot donated by Gen. Simon Perkins.

In 1853 the congregation purchased the Old Stone Church from the Universalists and worshipped there until a new church was erected on South Broadway in 1890. After worshipping there for 75 years, the cornerstone was laid for the current building.

Sunday also marks Power Sunday, the day when area pastors preach a message about stroke. The day is set aside by the American Heart Association to educate congregations about the warning signs of stroke. The local Power to End Stroke awareness campaign is a partnership of the American Stroke Association, Summa Health System and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. A Power Sunday kit is available at http://www.StrokeAssociation.org/power.
