Grandmother killed in North Akron home

Shots fired through wall as woman answers knock at door in middle of night

By Phil Trexler
Beacon Journal staff writer

The line of bullet holes next to the boarded front door is a dispassionate sign of the street violence that claimed an Akron grandmother.

Diane Mitchell-McMillan, 55, raised her four children in the modest two-story home along Jesse Avenue, a compact, brick-paved neighborhood street in North Akron.

She was home baby-sitting her 7-year-old grandson when a knock came at her front door about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

A person dressed in a dark jacket with a pointed hooded hat approached the front porch, ignoring a sign to please use the back door.

Neighbors say Mitchell-McMillan may have peeked outside, recognized the trouble and shooed her grandson to the attic. Regardless, in a flash, the intruder fired several shots through the wall next to the front door.

Calls to 911 rang out as neighbors heard the gunshots. Police arrived, broke inside and found Mitchell-McMillan dead near the front door. Her grandson was frightened, but unharmed.

An autopsy was performed by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office. The results were not released Monday.

Police are seeking the public's help in identifying the shooter. Lt. Rick Edwards said detectives are unsure of the shooter's sex or race.

Neighbors who watched the shooting unfold described a heartless attack.

''I saw a dark-like, large SUV-type, no plates, round headlights pull up,'' said one woman, who did not want to be identified. ''I saw the person get out of the passenger seat. Kind of a small build, couldn't really tell because it was dark and I'm several feet away.

''I watched him walk across the street, go up on the steps . . . I saw him walk across the porch . . . I didn't see the door open, but I thought I heard knocking.

''This person seemed to be on the porch for a couple seconds and then he started to leave the porch and when they did, I heard the gunfire, like four to five shots.

''It was bam, bam, bam, bam and I'm running into my house, not believing what I just saw. I never imagined a person walking across the street and doing this. It's such a shame and her grandbaby was in the house with her. I feel so bad for her family.''

Mitchell-McMillan lived on Jesse Avenue for more than 20 years, raising two sons and two daughters as a single mother. Neighbors said she was friendly, peaceful and hardworking.

Family members could not be reached for comment Monday.

Neighbor Rhiannon Eaton, 24, said she had known Mitchell-McMillan and her children all of her life.

''She was a great lady with such a big heart,'' she said. ''She deserved more than being mauled down in her own home.''

Neighbors say their quiet street by day has a dark side on occasion, with burglaries, nearby drug dealing and domestic quarrels.

Sunday's event was different.

''You have your fights and stuff like that, but never someone shooting into someone's house,'' neighbor Matt Steese said. ''That's inexcusable.''

Cynicism soon follows.

I would not be afraid if I lived in that neighborhood. That attack was obviously a vendetta shooting, if I ever read one. I dont know the family, but someone ticked off the boys with the guns.

While not justified by any means, it is an attack of thinning out the herd, by the herd itself.

Sorry folks, it will always be like that, AND NOT UNIQUE TO AKRON.

My thoughts are for the lady's family as well.

There seems to be quite a bit of these sort of things goin' on in our city. Mebbe once the city hall hero ungrounds himself, he'll take some time to address the growin' crime problem this city has.

"Burglaries, drug dealings"?

Welcome to Akron!

Too bad Mayor Don Plusquellic is more interested in travelling the world, "putting Akron on the map".

Mr. Mayor, put your buttocks on your chair at 161 S. High St. and do your job of tending to the troubles that lerk in the city you wanted to be elected to govern.

Oh, wait. Too late. He hasn't cared for decades, as well as the economy and crime are reflected in Akron. Do you know what that means? RECALL MAYOR PLUSQUELLIC!

Until all communities condem this type of behavior it will happen over and over again.

Did you read that Marco that comment was for you.

Everyone must support good behavior and achievmente. Throw out the rap music and the punk life styles that have developed. Look at people with this type of behavior with negative attitudes.

The communities must support good behavior in schools and above all support the police.

@ Wathin' in Summit County - Oh, I don't know about that.

It took him weeks to put together that interview. Must of been a good scramble by him and his cadre to cover those expenses.

And hasn't he been runnin' his mouth for years now??

What was more interestin' was him quotin' 15 years of alleged progress to cover two years worth of questionable expenses. Instead of him quotin' what those two years worth of travel and expendatures brought Akron.

Most folks missed that part.

North Hill is part of two Akron wards: Ward 1 is where the shooting took place, Tallmadge Ave, Main St, Cuyahoga Falls Ave, etc. Ward 2 is Tallmadge Ave starting near Dan St and runs up to Brittain Road. The council men are Jim Hurley and Bruce Kilby, respectively. I encourage everyone in these wards to contact their rep and see what's being done about our quality of life. I have never spoke with Mr. Hurley, but when I asked Mr. Kilby, his response was "Crime, huh...I don't know what to say." This type of quitter attitude is not acceptable, in my opinion. If we want to take back our city, we must start with our reps, and mayor. This is election year for city council, I encourage you to do your research and vote this year, its more important now than it ever has been.

Not everyone has a criminal past. In fact, no one in my immediate family has committed any crimes (besides speeding, etc).

Her son having a criminal past is relevent. I am sure it is relevent to the police in looking for her killer. And it is relevent to her neighbors who would be relieved it this wasn't a random act.

Whatever age you are whatever you have done in the past is exactly that.(Past) Having sincere saddness for murder; is the point, all it takes is Having a heart, kindness, and knowing God. I don't have to explain myself or my behavior. I'm mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother who loves God and my family without judgement. Please allow the police to be cops and start supporting them because no one else is available to attack these thugs. This is not the Tex-Mex border or the murder capital of Ohio. Some summer we are going to have here.......God Bless you and I'm glad you don't have to deal with this town anymore.

jwalk: WE must start taking back our city. First by electing people that want to do the job and second because of how bad our country has got to carry a gun. No police could have stopped this shooting as they cant be everywhere. It is up to you to be the first line of defence. Lets have complete families raising children, families with a father present and both mother and father doing their job. Now that would be a good start and in a few years crime and bad acting would go away.

BTW I am married to a grandma it is time to get her another pistol!

I AM ONE OF AUNTY'S DI'S NEICES, AND I FIND IT SUCH A DISGRACE TO OUR FAMILY THAT PEOPLE CAN BE SO CRUEL AND HEARTLESS!! IT AMAZES ME TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE CAN PASS JUDGEMENT SO QUICKLY AND IT BE JUSTIFIED AS SUCH. HERE IT IS, MY AUNT HAS LOST HER LIFE AND ALL YOU PEOPLE CAN THINK ABOUT IS SOMEONE BEING UP IN A SPECIFIC NEIGHBORHOOD AT A CERTAIN HOUR!!! REGARDLESS AS TO WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCES WERE OR COULD BE, NO HUMAN BEING DESRVES TO BE "ASSASSINATED"!! FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE NEVER EVER HAD A TRAGEDY SUCH AS THIS HAPPEN TO ANY OF YOUR LOVED ONES, SHOULDN'T HAVE AN OPINION OR A COMMENT, JUST COULDN'T SHOW JUST A SMALL BIT OF COMPASSION HUH? BUT I GUESS WHO WOULD EVEN CARE? THAT WOULD BE TOO MUCH LIKE BEING A CARING HUMAN BEING, JUST AS OUR HEAVENLY FATHER WOULD LIKE FOR US TO BE!! HE IS OUR JUDGE AND ONLY JUDGE!

Hey C,
Ask your cousin who did it. I'll bet he knows. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope that the child can cope with this somehow.

C - don't let the idiots upset you. I'll say a prayer for your aunt & the rest of your family.
