Wires spark fire

AKRON: Faulty wiring to a television set caused a house fire Tuesday night, Akron fire officials said.

The blaze, at a home in the 600 block of Blaine Avenue, started in a bedroom and was confined to the same floor, the fire department said.

Damage to the home was estimated at $20,000 and damage to the contents was estimated at $10,000.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist one adult and four children who were displaced by the fire.

The building was valued at $75,000.

There were no injuries.

Mom turns in teen

CANTON: A teenager has been charged with aggravated robbery after police said his mother identified him in a security camera video posted on a newspaper Web site.

Police say the woman saw the video of the sandwich shop robbery on the Canton Repository's site and turned in her son.

Tevin Burnett, 17, of Canton, will be tried as an adult. He was in Stark County Family Court Wednesday before being transferred to the county jail on $50,000 bond.

Police say Burnett and another male showed handguns and took $60, two employees' coats and a cell phone in the March robbery.

In an unrelated case, Burnett admitted Tuesday to sexually abusing an 8-year-old boy in 2007 and was sentenced to one year in the youth services system pending resolution of the robbery case.

JACKSON TWP.

Crash kills two men

JACKSON TWP.: Two Jackson Township men died after the car they were riding in collided with a tractor-trailer Monday night in Tuscarawas County.

The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. at U.S. Route 250 and McCauley Drive, the New Philadelphia post of the Ohio Highway Patrol reported.

David B. White, 43, of Lake O'Springs Avenue, was driving a 1983 Chevrolet Celebrity south on U.S. 250 when he failed to stop at a red light and collided with a tractor-trailer driven by Randy L. Miller, 55, of Mars, Pa.

Miller was traveling north on U.S. 250 and was making a left turn at North Water Street Extension when the collision occurred, officers said.

White and his passenger, William T. Hudspeth, 55, also of Lake O'Springs Avenue, were trapped in the vehicle that became lodged under the trailer in the collision.

Miller was not injured.

Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crash, authorities said.

Seniors targeted
AKRON: County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh is warning of a new scam targeting senior citizens.

A manager at the White Pond Villa senior complex in Akron said some residents received a postcard notifying them of a parcel package delivery, Walsh said. It asks the recipient to call a toll-free number.

The card shows a price-due amount in the top left corner and looks like a legitimate packing slip, Walsh said. The card includes a tracking number, locater number and items in the parcel contents.

The scam takes root when the recipient calls the number and is asked to provide personal credit card information for a ''processing fee.''

''This is a scam,'' Walsh said in an e-mail to the media Wednesday. ''Do not provide your credit card information or Social Security number to anyone.
