Driver sent to prison
AKRON: A repeat drunk-driving offender from Barberton has been sentenced to seven years in prison and has lost his driving privileges for life.
Summit County Common Pleas Judge Alison McCarty handed down the sentence to Ted Cartmel, 45, who was convicted of his ninth drunk-driving offense.
Cartmel had refused to take a breath test on his first eight arrests, but was forced to on his ninth because of a change in state law that requires repeat offenders to take the breath test or have a blood sample taken, according to a news release from Summit County prosecutor's Sherri Bevan Walsh's office.
The new law took effect last year.
Torch triggers fire
AKRON.: Fire officials have determined that a cutting torch being operated too closely to combustible materials caused an apartment fire on Friday that killed three dogs.

No people were injured in the fire, but several residents were displaced and were assisted by the American Red Cross.
