Mary Anne Cort, a 33-year education veteran, was named Wednesday as Akron Public Schools' 2009 Teacher of the Year.
Cort, who teaches fourth grade at Helen Arnold Community Learning Center, believes all students can achieve if given adequate time and appropriate resources. ''In our classroom, the motto is YES, WE CAN!'' Cort has said.
The University of Akron graduate has been tapped in the past for other honors: Ashland Oil Teacher Achievement Award and Portage Path PTA Outstanding Educator Award.
The eight other educators nominated for 2009 Teacher of the Year:
• Daniel Camburn, Garfield High School.
• Toby Clifford, Glover Community Learning Center.
• Mary Leahy, Buchtel High School.
• Janet Lippincott, King Elementary.
• Rebecca Oram, Hyre Middle School.
• Marianne Pramuka, Forest Hill Community Learning Center.
• Linda Reischman, Goodyear Middle School.
• Kimberly Shama-Hanna, Ritzman Elementary.
