• The Canton Area Association for the Education of Young Children gave its award for Early Childhood Advocate of the Year to Joseph French, executive director of the Early Childhood Alliance; its Early Childhood Administrator of the Year award to Betty Thompson, site administrator for Stark County Community Action Agency's William Hunter Head Start Center; Early Childhood Teacher of the Year to Nicole Wallin at the Interfaith Child Development Center in Alliance; and Early Childhood Family Child Care Provider of the Year to Amy Gusbar, owner of Day and Night Care in Canton.

• The Institute for Teaching and Learning at the University of Akron gave its award for 2009 Outstanding Teacher-Scholar to Matthew Wyszynski, associate professor of modern languages; Outstanding Part-Time Faculty, Diane Sotnak, associate lecturer, sociology; Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant-Masters, Alyssa Berthiaume, graduate assistant, Women's Studies; Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant-Doctoral, Andrew Lam, graduate assistant, psychology; Outstanding Teacher/Mentor of First-Year Students, academic adviser Gail Tankersley; and Outstanding Teacher/Mentor of First-Year Students, Jessica Hopkins, assistant professor of biology.
• Mary Brady of Louisville received a scholarship from the Canton Area Association for the Education of Young Children. She is pursuing her master's degree in early childhood education at Concordia College.
• Three St. Francis De Sales students were named State Handwriting Winners in the National Handwriting Contest sponsored by Zaner-Bloser Educational Publishers. Sixth-grader Anna Reece, seventh-grader Austin Griffith and eighth-grader Allison Griffith received engraved wood pens, an award certificate and a $50 gift certificate from Zaner-Bloser for the school. In addition, Austin Griffith was named Seventh-Grade National Champion and is competing for the title of Grand National Champion.
• Kent State's College of Business Administration honored John D. Relic of Richfield with its Accounting Alumnus of the Year Award. He has served a seven-year term on the Accountancy Board for the state of Ohio, is past president of the Greater Cleveland/Akron chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and is a member of the Advisory Council for KSU's accounting program.
• Brittany Lee, daughter of Mary Lee of Alliance, received the Outstanding Overall Contribution in Television Award at the Ashland University Communication Arts banquet. Melissa Loar, daughter of Steve and Terri Loar of Alliance, received the Outstanding Reporter Award. Morgan Polovick, daughter of Michael and Cynthia Polovick of Hudson, received the Outstanding Columnist Award.
• Nicholas Mizenko of Medina, son of Nicholas Mizenko and Jeanette Porvbovich-Mizenko, was inducted into Pi Sigma Pi scholastic honor fraternity at Westminster College. He is a senior biochemistry major.
• Krystal Coffman, daughter of Duane and Rochell Coffman of Spencer, received the annual Medina County Auditor's Office Scholarship for 2009. The $500 award is funded by the auditor's staff. Krystal will graduate from Black River High School this spring and enroll in the dental assistant's program at the Medina County Career Center.
• Rachel K. Baughman, daughter of Jamie and Scott Baughman of Kent, was named an Outstanding First-Year McDonough Scholar at Marietta College. She is majoring in history.
• Lauren A. Smith of Wadsworth, a senior at Ohio Wesleyan University, received an award for the outstanding presentation at the 2009 joint scientific meeting of the Wilson Ornithological Society and the Association of Field Ornithologists. Smith, a zoology and English double major, is the daughter of Michael and Vicki Smith.
• Margaret Atkinson, an associate professor of accounting and
finance technology, received the 2008-2009 Distinguished Teacher Award at Stark State College. Eric Toalston, a tutor, received the Adjunct Excel lence in Teaching Award.
Kathleen Steere, a chemistry lab technician, received the Staff Excellence Award. Each recipient was honored at Stark State's annual Employee Recognition Event.
• Two Akron-area students received the Emerson Scholarship at Ashland University: Christopher McLain, son of Stephen and Anne McLain of Massillon, and Kerry Miles, son of Dave and Mary Miles of Richfield. The $2,800 awards go to senior business and economic students with strong academic records.
• Mary L. Stoudenmire of
Canton, a senior at Malone University, was named the BSW Student of the Year by Region 8 of the the National Association of Social Workers. She plans to attend Case Western Reserve University next year to major in gerontology.
Military news
• Army Reserve Pfc. Ashley R. Brown, granddaughter of Georgia Williams and daughter of Rose Webb, both of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She received an associate degree in 2008 from Brown Mackie College.
