School news
• Rebecca Odell, a Kent State junior majoring in public relations, received the 2009 Future Vision Award Scholarship from IABC Cleveland. The scholarship is worth $2,000 toward senior year studies.
• Niki Hayes, a secretary at Sharon Elementary School, received the 2009 Highland Pride Award from the Highland School District. The award recognizes individuals who have provided exemplary service to the district. The 2009 Highland Pride Community Award went to Brenda Roth-Hennessy, an active volunteer at Sharon Elementary School.
• Mary D. Calabro of Stow received the 2009 Jeanette Wooding Service Award from the Summit and Portage District of the Ohio Nurses Association. Calabro served on the board of directors for both the disrict and state organization.
• Two students at St. Barnabas Elementary School in Northfield, Katie Farley and Christine Waszkowski, received a Junior Group Exhibit Honorable Mention at National History Day at Columbus State Community College.
• Rebecca Corsi and John Graham were named student members of the Board of Trustees at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy in Rootstown. They represent students on the trustee board. Corsi is a second-year pharmacy student, and Graham is a first-year medical student.
• Zoe Dong, a student at Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Akron, won Best of Show and the Blue Ribbon Award from the Cleveland Clinic for her artistic interpretation of art and wellness. Her artwork was among those displayed at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland.
• Sharanbir Grewal, son of Parwinder and Sukhbir Grewal of Wooster, won first place and a $2,625 scholarship in a statewide competition sponsored by Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives. The Wooster High senior was sponsored by Holmes-Wayne Electric Cooperative Inc. in Millersburg.
• The Stark State College Alumni Council inducted Larry Ray, class of 1985; Margaret Matasic, class of 1991; and Ray Wymer, class of 1976, into the Alumni Hall of Fame: Ray is department chair and assistant professor of information technology at Stark State.; Matasic, a physical therapist at Premier Therapy Services and Blue Sky Therapy Management; and Wymer, co-founder and vice president of Life Cycle Strategies, which provides business-to-business product management and marketing.
• The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation recognized several Northeast Ohio teachers as 2008-09 Jennings Lecture Series Scholars: Irene Adler, Sharon Brooks, Rachel Chaplin, Gayle Davis, Steve Deitrick, Ruth Hotchkiss, Norma James, Sara Leffler, Debbie Lower, Nancy Plavin, Curt Smith, Connie Smith-Clemens, Jan Whitney and Diana Williams, all of Akron Public Schools; Dianna Couts, Minerva Local Schools; Susan Elliott and Heather Phillips, Springfield Local Schools; Joseph Headley and Toni Nuosce, Coventry Local Schools; Wayne Sanders II, Manchester Local Schools; Michael Santee, Chippewa Local Schools; Robert Ulrich, Plain Local Schools; and Tammy Anfang, Crestwood Local Schools.
• Sana Saleem Syal of Richfield, daughter of Tariq and Kaki Saleem, was recognized as a Top Senior in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at Ohio State. She was one of three seniors who received the Newcomb Scholar Award last month.
• Jo Ann Davidson, former speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, and Harry Meshel, former president of the Ohio Senate, were honored by the University of Akron's Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics with honorary certificates in applied politics.
• Tiffany A. Garzon of Fairlawn, Lisa A. Kelp of North Canton, Kimberly J. Ross of Louisville and Amanda S. Tietze of Canton were inducted into the Mu Upsilon chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, national honor society for non-traditional students at Malone University.
• William Brian Arbuckle, associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Akron, received the 2009 Outstanding Teacher Award from UA's College of Engineering. He was chosen by students in the Tau Beta Pi engineering honors society.
• Joseph Bolognese of Stow was one of 32 students nationwide to receive a 2009 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship. He will use his scholarship at the University of Southern California. The low-income, high achieving students will receive scholarships of up to $30,000 per year for four years.
• The Junior Women's Civic Club in Akron awarded Amelia Troutman, a senior at Revere High School, and Leah Hunter, a senior at Medina High School, with $2,000 scholarships to attend an Ohio college or university.
Military news
• Army National Guard Pvt. Joe Shape, son of Mike and Deanna Shape of Canal Fulton, completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. He is a graduate of Northwest High School.
