Riders to remember corrections officer

Event to raise funds for man's wife, children

Beacon Journal staff report

A memorial motorcycle ride for William ''Bill'' Hesson, 39, the Army veteran and state juvenile corrections officer killed on the job April 29, will be held June 14, with registration beginning at 11 a.m. and the first bike out at 1 p.m.

The ride will raise funds for Hesson's pregnant wife, Julia, and children, Brandi, 19, Skyler, 17, and Riley, 20 months. Hesson had not worked at the juvenile facility long enough to qualify for death benefits.

The ride begins at the Gala Commons, 2215 E. Waterloo Road, Akron, in the rear lot, and ends at the National Veterans Cemetery in Rittman, where Hesson is buried. His family will be there to meet the bikers.

Cost for the ride is $10. Donations are also being accepted by the Warthogs Rubber City Chapter, which is sponsoring the event. The Warthogs are a national motorcycle club for police, fire, corrections and court employees.

To donate, send a check to Treasurer Bill Muncy, 1177 Woodland St., Hartville, 44632. For details, call Muncy at 330-685-2899 or Jeff at 330-714-4822.

A 17-year-old inmate from Erie County has been charged with Hesson's death during an assault at the Cuyahoga Hills Juvenile Correctional Facility.

I hope people can throw a check toward this man's family. I bet this punk kid won't get off with an apology letter to the family, but since the system treats them like children.....RIP.

You would think that even though he was not "on the job" long enough to receive death benefits, he was still killed in the line of duty. This is ridiculous. The county needs to make exceptions in cases like this - no matter - there is no excuse.

It is funny that even part-time police officers in many suburbs, who place their lives on the line everyday (as their full-time peers) do not receive benefits at all . . . it's a joke that's not funny.

My condolences to the family.

Why does it matter if they pose or not? The purpose is to raise money for the family and if they can raise it by posing let them! It is no harm done, people still know who he was and what he did. I hope they can raise a lot of money for the family, it is very hard to raise kids alone.

We are going to do our best at raising money. Were not posers. We love to ride and make money for the fallen. We have raised tens of thousands of dolars for these events and to have someone come on here and post negative comments is wrong. Thank to everyone for their support.

we just found this out today. You folks can count on us to be there for this fallen Officer. There are many branches on the Law Enforcement tree and we honor all of them. God bless you Bill. Rest in knowing that others will follow the road you took. Many of us will never stop trying to right the wrongs.

Maximus- Hey I think I just saw the latest POSE earlier today. I haven't seen it before so it might be new. Instead of the left arm on the knee while riding he just had it hanging down by his side. Have you seen that POSE yet? If not you can start using it before the other clones start.
