Ball paves the way for Towpath

Canal Captain's event raises $350,000 for restoration work over the years

By Betty O'Neill-Roderick
Special to the Beacon Journal

Summit County Executive Russ Pry was honorary canalboat captain at the Canal Captain's Ball Saturday night at Fairlawn Country Club. Pry praised the many volunteers who have made the Ohio & Erie Canalway a reality for future generations; canalway coalition board Chairman Chris Burnham for his energy in leading the project; and Libert and Madeline Bozzelli, who give their time to community projects. ''Our community is richer because of their involvement,'' he said.

Madeline Bozzelli has chaired the annual ball since its inception 14 years ago.

Canalway coalition Executive Director Dan Rice said 78 miles of the Towpath Trail are complete, and he praised volunteers, his staff and board members. Rice told the crowd of 250 people that restoration of buildings in downtown Clinton is under way and renovation of the Howe House in downtown Akron should be completed this fall.

Steve and Heidi Hamet admired the historic documents framed by Karl and Terri Lucas for the silent auction, which featured an array of goods and services. Enjoying the music of That's Lew's Jazz as they placed their bids were Tony and Toby Gorant, Ed and Lynn Metzger, Rob and Peg Bobel, Denny Stoiber, Kathy Fernandez, Margaret Lazzerini, Ken Dague, Ellen Otto, Larry Pentecost, Jonathan Scholles and Tara Tober.

Fran Buchholzer said she looks forward to Canal Adventure 2009 as she coaxed Dale and Mary Ruther, Keith and Barbara Shy, Lois Sumegi and John Reyes to accompany her along the Towpath Trail from New Philadelphia to Cleveland. Jon and Cindy Elsasser enjoyed dinner with Carol and Mike Murphy, and Holly Unger.

Rice said the Canal Captains' Ball has raised over $350,000 to support restoration of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, and the Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway.

Interesting names among the group:
Fran Buchholzer, Denny Stoiber, Keith Shy, and John Reyes. I believe I will print this out and put with my files. Now, why don't you four raise money for the sewer overflows running beside the trail and through the Ohio Erie Canal? Oh well, it will all wash to the surface just as the sewers have.

Now Mary, one thing at a time. With the amount of money these small non-profit fundraisers bring in it would take around 100-years to raise what's needed to fix Akron sewers.

Whoops!!! Was my math off Mary, sorry about that..... It would take more than 6,000 years to raise enough money to fix Akron sewers @ the rate of about $40,000 a year ($250,000,000 / $40,000 a year = 6250 years)! If you would like to wait that long we'll be glad to tackle the problem after the trail is finished. It's just not in Akron you know, it goes from Cleveland to New Philidelpia- so we're busy working in three counties and numerous communities.

Mr. Sarcastic:
Funny everytime I comment on the sewers you show up with a comment. How long did you know about the sewers overflowing? Since the seventies? Could you be the one who took me to the Canal and showed me the overflows? Fundraisers should be directed at helping people who need the money, not covering up an issue. Sorry, the bike and hike trail is just a connect the dots to all the landfills across Ohio. But of course the sewers documents from Akron and Summit county show it was well known the sewers were crushed, broken, and backed up since the seventies. Crusades should help people not be political corruption gateways. Oh Well, I am printing this out to go to Columbus with everything else. Should be get interesting in a few months

Funny Mr. Sarcastic how the sewer overflows contaminated all the way to Lake Erie by way of Cuyahoga River and all the way to New Philadelphia Ohio by way of the Tuscarawrus River. Now, did you say the trail goes from New Philadelphia to Cleveland. Imagine that. Guess you already knew along with others where the contamination was. Go Figure. You such an abiding citizen
