Leslie Heaphy, an associate professor of history, received the 2008-2009 Distinguished Teaching Award at Kent State Stark. Award finalists were Andrew Burns, associate professor of chemistry, and Timothy Montgomery, instructor of physics. Lisa Hart, an adjunct professor of undergraduate studies, received the Award of Distinction, an honor presented to part-time Kent State Stark faculty.

• The Alumni Executive Board of Hiram College presented the Alumni Volunteer Award to board of trustee member Kathy Coleman of Novelty, Ohio; the Recent Graduate Service to Humanity Award to Mandy Mehlman of Worthington, Ohio, a homework help coordinator at the
Worthington Public Library; Alumni Achievement Award to Thomas Reuschling of Lakeland, Fla., president emeritus of Florida Southern College; and the Alumni Achievement Award and 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award to Jonathan Estrin of Los Angeles, president of the Constitutional Rights Foundation.

Kevin A. Butler, manager of geographic information science research, received the Outstanding Contract Professional Award at the University of Akron's annual Founders Day luncheon. Mark Pratt, a package delivery staffer, received the Outstanding Staff Award. Undergraduate programs in the College of Business Administration received the Unit Shared Leadership Award.

Elizabeth De Luca, daughter of Romy De Luca and Lynn De Luca of Akron, received the President's Scholarship from the University of Findlay. She is a 2009 graduate of Ellet High School. Melissa Marmaduke, daughter of Patricia and Robert Marmaduke of Akron. received the Trustees' Scholarship. She is a 2009 graduate of Ellet High School. Ellen Peterman, daughter of Karen Holmes and David Peterman of Akron, received the President's Scholarship. She is a 2009 graduate of Revere High School.

• Two members of the Malone College chapter of the Financial Management Association were inducted into the organization's National Honor Society: Ross Cochrell, a 2008 graduate with a business administration major from Burbank; and Galene Kalengis, a 2009 graduate with a master's degree in business administration from North Canton.

• The Society for Handicapped Citizens of Medina County/The Arc, selected Kyle Biggins and Brittany Bunch as this year's H.O.P.E. Scholarship recipients. Biggins is an early childhood special education major at Lorain County Community College; Bunch, an interventions specialist major at the University of Akron. Both received $500 awards.

Olivia Joy of Ravenna, a 10th-grader at the Ohio Distance and Electronic Learning Academy, received top honors for her prose entry at the third annual Ohioana Book Festival. She was one of six students who received the Robert Fox Award for Young Writers.
