Renovation deal near for former Hoover site

North Canton council expected to vote today on funding agreement

By Dottie McGrew
Special to the Beacon Journal

NORTH CANTON: The City Council is expected to vote today on a construction management agreement with Maple Street Commerce, which would allow the movement of millions in state funds into the rehabilitation of the former Hoover Co. facility.

Last November, the city was awarded a $5 million Jobs Ready Sites grant from the Ohio Department of Development. Maple Street Commerce is matching the grant with $1.67 million.

Maple Street Commerce is a partnership of California-based Industrial Realty Group, Cleveland-based Industrial Commerce and DeHoff Development of North Canton.

Under the agreement, Maple Street Commerce would act as the construction manager for the project and will assume the city's role in administering the state grant.

Maple Street Commerce would pay the bills and request reimbursement from the state through the city.

North Canton Economic Development Director Eric Bowles would monitor expenditures to ensure
compliance with grant regulations.

The project calls for $3 million to be used for renovation of the Hoover facility. The remaining $2 million will be directed to improving streets, sewer lines and other infrastructure on the perimeter of the property.

City Engineer Jim Benekos said priorities for spending the funds are still being determined.

Tests will be made over the next few weeks to determine the strength of Taft, Witwer, Hower and other nearby residential streets, Benekos said.

''Different concepts [for spending the funds] have been floated,'' Benekos said, ''but the project is developer driven. He knows how much money we have to make the site viable.''
