AKRON
Robber sentenced
AKRON: Summit County Common Pleas Judge Elinore Stormer sentenced Erik Mahone, 29, of Akron, to 10 years in prison on two separate charges.
Mahone was charged with threatening a store clerk with a gun at an adult video store on Case Avenue and stealing $310 from a cash register. As he was leaving, authorities say, the clerk grabbed a gun from under a desk and shot Mahone once in the side and once in the cheek.
Police matched DNA samples at the scene to Mahone. He was given a seven-year sentence for aggravated robbery with a gun specification and having weapons while under disability.
He also received 18 months for receiving stolen property in a separate case involving a stolen credit card and an additional 18 months because he was on probation when the two offenses occurred.
Work on Hilbish
AKRON: Work is proceeding on plans to reconstruct Hilbish Avenue, a concrete road that the city has been patching for years.
The Akron City Council voted Monday to partner with the Ohio Department of Transportation on the estimated $3.4 million project. Most of the project will be paid with federal stimulus funds.
The project's design is expected to be completed by this fall, with construction slated to start in the spring.
Plans include turning the four-lane concrete road — between Triplett Boulevard and East Market Street — into a three-lane asphalt street and adding new curbs, sidewalks, driveway aprons and street trees. Several intersections will be evaluated to see if traffic signals are warranted, said Ken Kostura, Akron's manager of engineering administrative services.
The city held a public hearing on the project. Another will be scheduled by late July.
In other business, the council approved an agreement for Cuyahoga Falls to provide back-up 911 service in the event Akron's dispatch center had to be evacuated in an emergency. The back-up service would be temporary, until Akron could restart its 911 system at a different location.
No delays for trash
AKRON: The city of Akron will have no delays of curb-side trash and recycling service this week because of the holiday.
Normal service will occur Monday through Friday.
Meeting canceled
AKRON: Kenneth Jones, Ward 5 councilman, has canceled his ward meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at East Akron Community House.
MACEDONIA
Route 82 to close
MACEDONIA: The Ohio Department of Transportation will shut down state Route 82 just east of Interstate 271 at 9 p.m. Wednesday as construction workers remove an old railroad bridge.
The road should be closed for only about 10 minutes, weather permitting, officials said.
The work is part of ODOT's ongoing $19.2 million widening and bridge replacement project that is expected to be completed this fall.
The new railroad bridge opened earlier this month. The old span is expected to be lifted in one piece by a giant crane and placed at the side of the road.
Route 82 is a major east-west artery that passes under the railroad tracks, which bisect the community.
Mayor Don Kuchta said he can't wait for the old bridge to go. Last summer, two trucks got stuck under it. The new bridge is a foot higher, he noted.
MEDINA
Air polluter fined
MEDINA: Plasti-Kote Co. Inc. has agreed to pay a $240,000 fine for air pollution violations at its paints and coatings plant.
The company was cited for numerous permit violations following facility inspections in 2005 and 2007 by the Akron Regional Air Quality Management District..
Plasti-Kote's violations included exceeding operating restrictions on coatings use and content, failing to maintain required records and incomplete reporting of permit and compliance information.
In addition, the company later reported it exceeded permitted limits of volatile organic compounds on 16 days in 2008 at its plant at 1000 Lake Road.
The company is now in compliance with Ohio's air rules, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency reported.
Plasti-Kote manufactures various paints and coatings for home and automotive use. The facility is permitted to operate numerous spray booths, mixing stations and other equipment that emit air pollutants.
NORTON
Fire cause unknown
NORTON: The cause of the fire that destroyed an adult video store visible from Interstate 76 in Norton this month remains undetermined.
Norton Fire Chief Mike Schultz said Monday he anticipates the building's owner completing the necessary paperwork to have the Norton Video structure demolished in July.
Fire engulfed the adult video store at Barber Road and I-76 on the afternoon of June 17.
An employee of the store said a customer reported that the corner of the building was on fire. The employee said he detected the smell of plastic burning. Schultz said a damage estimate has not been determined, but said the building was a total loss.
The store, which is owned by Rondee Kamins, sold magazines and novelties as well as adult videos. The building is owned by Eugene Fink.
REVERE SCHOOLS
Language effort
BATH TWP.: Andie LaBadie, Revere director of instruction, has updated school officials about the district's Ohio Graduation Test results and the recommendation of Revere's World Language Committee.
Revere's 10th-graders showed an ''overall increase in all areas'' of the test, said LaBadie, scoring their highest percentage to date on this statewide test.
Results were a 94 percent passage rate in reading and in science; 96 percent rate in social studies; 97 percent rate in math; and a 98 percent rate in writing.
Discussing recommendations from the committee that looked at all of the language programs in the district, LaBadie said the preference was to retain and/or increase the programs in French, German, Latin, Spanish and American Sign Language and to work toward incorporating Mandarin into the curriculum, particularly with the ''heavy push'' toward Chinese statewide.
The committee also suggested a world language exploratory program in the seventh grade, before students choose a language the next school year, and looking into the feasibility of offering languages in kindergarten.

Panel deadlocks
DAYTON: The question of whether state Sen. Jon Husted legally resides in his Dayton-area district was thrown back to the Ohio secretary of state Monday.
The Montgomery County Board of Elections again deadlocked on the issue, voting 2-2 along party lines. The board also split in February.
The board began investigating after questions were raised about whether Husted was living in the suburban Kettering home where he's registered to vote.
Husted says the Kettering home is his legal residence, but that he often stays with his wife and children at her home in Columbus because of the demands of his job in the legislature. Husted said the law allows for absences from the Kettering residence on state business and that he intends to return there.
Jeff Ortega, spokesman for Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, said Brunner will make a decision after a staff attorney makes a recommendation following a review of the county board's deliberations.
The board was considering Husted's residency only for the purpose of determining whether he is eligible to vote in Montgomery County. Any potential implications on how a final decision might affect Husted's Senate seat would have to be determined by the Senate.

Fundraiser for judge
CUYAHOGA FALLS: The Keep Judge Fallis Committee will host ''An Evening at the Vineyard'' fundraiser for Akron Municipal Judge Stephen Fallis from 5 to 8 tonight at Sarah's Vineyard, 1204 W. Steels Corners Road.
The public is invited to join Fallis for wine and appetizers.
Recommended donations are $50 per person or $75 per couple.
