Robbers invade three homes

Two people shot on Orlando Avenue. Three assaulted on 17th Street Southwest

Beacon Journal staff report

The Akron Police Department is investigating three home invasions over the weekend.

Officials said the break-ins do not appear to be related.

Two people were shot during the first robbery, about 3 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Orlando Avenue. The victims told police that two gunmen entered the home through an unlocked door and demanded their cell phones and money.

One of the robbers shot each of the victims, ages 21 and 22, in the lower leg. They were taken to Akron General Medial Center with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening. There was no description available of the robbers.

About 2 a.m. Saturday, four to six males wearing black clothing and masks broke into a house in the 2200 block of 17th Street Southwest. They attacked a 46-year-old woman who was sleeping on a couch, using a Taser.

Two other victims — a 24-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man who were asleep upstairs — were assaulted with a metal pipe. The intruders tried to take a television, then fled.

The 46-year-old refused medical treatment. The other victims were taken to Summa Health System Barberton Hospital with injuries that did not appear life threatening.

Officers said they found evidence at the home of someone cultivating marijuana.

Two men were arrested in the third robbery, which occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of Delia Avenue.

A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman told police several men entered a side door and ordered the man to the floor at gunpoint. The woman ran out the back door to a neighbor's home to call police. The robbers took a wallet and more than $600 before fleeing.

The man reported that a male acquaintance stopped at his house just before the robbery to use the phone. Police followed up on that lead and recovered the stolen property in the 1500 block of Maxen Drive, as well as drugs and money.

Arrested were Anthony A. Shropshire, 29, of Maxen Drive, and Darshawn D. Hood, 23, of Breckenridge Street.

They were charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, illegally having weapons, possession of criminal tools, possession of crack and mushrooms, possession of a counterfeit controlled substance and possession of marijuana. They were booked into the Summit County Jail.

It's like the wild wild west down there. It's pretty sad when you have to have a gun sitting next to you on the couch while you watch TV just to be safe, but that is what it's coming to.

The ONLY way to stop these thugs is to blast them to eternity. So let's hear some drivel from the gun control freaks . . . or . . . the bleeding hearts about "how every life is sacred". WRONG. The lives of the victims are sacred and the criminals count for absolutely nothing.

Fact - a criminal will get a weapon one way or another. The best way to eliminate more break-ins is for one of these thugs to get his face relocated by a shotgun . . . then another . . . then another.

Holding your gun properly and shooting straight is the best GUN CONTROL!

I'd ask why the ABJ hasn't commented on these recent crimes in Akron, but they don't ask him questions, nor does he seem to answer them.

To be fair, he could be out of the city/state/country on vacation......er, city business, and not available for comment.

The good news is, that 20,000 people decided that he's the best, and deterin' crime isn't important.

I love Akron they have Mayor Plusquellic. He is like Obama and will save us by spending money on pet projects and give money to the poor people who are too lazy to work.

Betamax,

Is that what 20,000 people said? However, if you want to play that game, maybe they were just recognizing the low murder rate in Akron in 2009. According to you, that feat is directly attributable to the mayor, though I tend to think that's a little simplistic.

Okay, I don't get it.. is it okay that the robbers came into a house where they were growing weed? Since it seems that everyone on this page likes to put down the victim if they aren't 100% clean wanted to see if it was alright. Just asking.

Just to be clear, the average joe does not get his home invaded. 99 percent of the time, this victims were selling drugs and thats what the robbers were after. So don't panic unless you have a nice marijuana grow operation going in your basement.

Once again, the average taxpayer isnt getting his house invaded. They only invade the homes of people selling dope or rumoured to have large amounts of cash.
